So, a reliable source told me that apparently, Johnny Depp, Capn Jack himself, is in talks to play the Riddler... And then I saw this---

Not only that, but rumors of the Penguin in the next film are even more "substancial" now, as my source told me that at one point, they considered putting in the penguin (through a mention) in the Gotham Knight, which is further evidenced by the novelization made working with the original scripts for the animated masterpiece! Towards the back, barely mentioned, is Oswald Cobblepot!

Hoffman was rumored for Penguin even before Dark Knight started shooting-as for Depp being Riddler.all i will say is take it from me that if rumors come from an English newspaper,its got a 99% chance of being bullshit ;)

My friend and I were talking today about if the Penguin would ever be in it and how he could actually be...cool.


I personally don't like the Penguin. He's a dumb, boring character and is too "cartoony" for me, BUT, I think someone like Hoffman could actually pull it off and make the Penguin creepy and not the complete dumb joke that DeVito made him in Batman Returns.

Nolan seems to be on a great streak so far in terms of making the characters dark, scary and cool. I think if he wanted to, he could do an awesome version of the Penguin.

who was also an early rumor for the Joker. as has been said, whatever is floating around are simply ideas some honchos have, but will have zero bearing on what will become of Batman 3. with the success of the Dark Knight, Nolan certainly has cart blanche to do as he pleases, and when the time comes, he will not only dictate what characters will be in the movie but who will play them. studio execs, producers and agents can leak their wish rumors until they are blue in the face.

Folks, Johnny Depp is not going to play the Riddler. Philip Seymour Hoffman is NOT going to play the Penguin. Mr. Nolan has a track record of not going with these fangasm choices for his cast and I'm sure it will continue. Besides, both of those choices would suck in those roles. I don't mean to sound like I think I'm so above other fans, but people blurt out the names of these actors because they would look good dressed as the comic version of these characters at a Halloween party; not because they would be exceptional in the role. Who here didn't go WTF? when they heard Heath Ledger was going to play the Joker? And if there's anyone who says they didn't have at least a moment where they did the dog hearing a funny noise look when they heard he was going to play the character, they're lying.But he was fucking awesome, wasn't he. As I told a friend of mine, I wasn't convinced he could pull it off, I was only convinced that Mr. Nolan wouldn't have cast him otherwise. I have faith in Nolan to continue the trend of realism, reverence for the characters and believability he brings to these movies. By doing that, these wet dreams for a Depp Riddler are never going to happen.

Yep, he shows up in the beginning, hoping to scare some Russian mob guys. And Snake Eyes, Eccleston WAS considered for Scarecrow...except I'd still prefer Doctor 10 over 9 as the Riddler.
