View Full Version : G.I. Joe Comic #9 Cobra Commander Vs Tripwire

Yes, we’ve gotten more Cobra Commanders than we know what to do with lately, but this time around, he’s worth having. Made up from a Crimson Guard body and Hooded Cobra Commander head, the only new parts on this figure are belts and accessories. Typically this combination would spell disaster for a figure, but in this case it pays off. This figure reminds me of a blue version of the Black Battle Corps Cobra Commander. Only differences are that now he has a sword and a cape.

Unfortunately the cape looks as good as any other cape Cobra Commander has come with. Although, this one does look better than previous capes, it still just doesn’t look right. At least you don’t have to take his head off or something to remove it. The sword is pretty cool with a detailed Cobra for the handle. The only problem other than the cape is that the shoulder strap that connects the belt keeps it from going a far down as it should to cover where the CG’s belt went. This wouldn’t be a problem if the area in question had the same detail that’s on either side of it instead of being flattened and slightly recessed. Cobra Commander comes with a Pistol, Sword, Cape and Cobra Stand.

Tripwire is one of those that I thought was acceptable and didn’t give too much of a second look at when I first saw pictures of him. Now that I have him in hand, I’m thoroughly pleased with him. Like all the other figures in this wave, he’s mostly made up of a reused body. This time it’s Flash’s body with new lower legs and a new head. Many originally thought the head was a retooled Tele-Viper head, but it’s completely new. All the pads have a quilted design on them. I originally though they should have used the flat chest like the artwork shows, but the quilted pattern doesn’t distract from the figure at all. All the colors look exactly like the original even the insignia on his right arm is there. He has a new belt with a flat, no design buckle unlike the “Hasbro House” buckle Flash came with. All of his accessories are new but look exactly like the originals with a few additions. The Land mines have new details added to the bottom of them, the backpack has been changed to fit the new back hole and the sweeper has a monitor added to the side of it. Tripwire also comes with a GI Joe Stand.

Tripwire is a perfect upgrade, even with the reused body. He has the classic look down pat.

Awesome review. I love this set. The CC is now my default CC. Tripwire looks just like the 83 figure! I wish more of the 25th updates were as accurate as TW.

Tripwire has always been one of my favorites. I'm glad they did such a good job on him.

Tripwire looks great, one of my favorites to come out. He's fairly big when compared to some other figures, though - especially his head.

yeah I gotta say that this one was much better than i was expecting. Like a few others this CC is now my default CC. For some reasons this CC just reached out and grabbed me as far as its over all design and coolness. The tripwire itself is worth this set alone but both figures make it truly awesome. My second fave cp yet, with falcon being the first.

I need that Tripwire.
I have multiples of the 01 release, and gave them rifles, and use them as greenshirts.

I like this set and Tripwire is great. There is a small flaw with CC that Shogi didn't mention. He's missing the CG revolver that goes in the CG holster on his left leg.

I'm not sure if this is a new cost cutting measure by Hasbro but they've been doing it a lot lately. Lt. Falcon has a holster with no pistol and some of the vehicle figures have missing accessories. I, like many of you, realize toys are made of plastic which is a petroleum product but the missing parts are small. Plus, it's not like the molds are hard to find.

Dang-it... now I have to open the only set of wave 5 comic packs I've found so far... usually I wait until I get a second set to open them.

I'm going to do my standard hose custom on Tripwire's sweeper.

This is the comic pack to buy from this wave. Tripwire is easily one of the best looking joe figures so far and the new CC isn't bad either. Sadly I can't say the same for IG/Destro and Nemesis Enforcer/Lt.Falcon comic packs.

Wow, TRIPWIRE is even more awesome in close up. Nice pics. COBRA COMMANDER is prety cool too considering there are no original parts.

If Tripwire's head seems big to some it's because he's wearing that big helmet over his head, which for once in a rare while Hasbro must have realized helmets on peoples heads make them look bigger. *glares at the Destro figure*

I dunno if Destro's mask would add much to him... I never thought it was that thick and it was fitted to his face wasn't it? (though I never understood how the mouth was as malleable as it was).

Heres an idea Hasbro....melt your useless Duke Arms down and give us weapons and equipment that should go with a figure........guns......TeleViper gear.........

Yeah and this time Hasbro will smooth out the quilted armor.
Just like they fixed Flint in his TF version and just llike they fixed Duke in his TF version. Why Hasbro...why?

Yeah, the hose from the mine detector lacks a nub that makes it stay in the backpack. The mine detector was updated though, with a little display screen. The mine detector hose doesn't stay in the backpack for long without the nub.

Like Flash and Breaker before him, I wish when they updated the weapons, they had used rubber hose and tabs instead of the 1982-1983 style plastic cables.

I used the comic pack Duke's gun as that figure is an eyesore.

people may be sick of CC, but the figure is easily the best of the line and would have been a cool single pack figure as well.

ike Flash and Breaker before him, I wish when they updated the weapons, they had used rubber hose and tabs instead of the 1982-1983 style plastic cables.

yeah, i was really shocked to see that when Flash, Torch and Breaker came out ~ those plastic cords sucked like hell in the 80s and there worse in the slightly larger 25th figures. (i can't even get Flash's to stay in the backpack and pull off a cool pose.

I don't care much for Cobra Commander right now. Note that I haven't messed with him much so I don't know what can be done. However, the straps and belts are too tight and the belt doesn't correspond to the blank part for the belt on the CG mold. Also, while not quite yellow, I dislike the color of the belts and straps.

My figure cannot stand up straight because of the ill-fitting gear.

Somebody suggested using needlenose pliers to get the cord into the backpack, and it works great for Flash. It goes in pretty easily and should be set in well enough that it won't pop out. Still significantly limits the range of movement with the gun, but it works.

I didn't have any problems with Torch.

The figures were bad-azz, we finally got one of the original 83 characters and not a damn repaint. On the other hand CC is a repaint/resculpt, but they finally made a comic book accurate piece. I am an opener and I like to read the comics. I thought the Destro comic was kinda boring, the Falcon one was kinda gory, this one I was laughing so hard my sides hurt; when they blew up commanders mask. It reminded me of a favorite movie of mine CHEECH and CHONG'S NEXT MOVIE when Chong said quote "got a light man? and Cheech replied I wouldn't light that all these gas fumes; Chong's like aww man that instant KAPOW!!!" LMAO hard core especially when CC had a patch sewn on his head look like a hooded toupee.

I just opened the 2-pack this morning (had it for weeks now, broke down finally). I got my "opener" from HTS finally, card was bent to hell. But the figures were in great shape!

The CC donated his head to my M.A.S.S. device CC (I swap the heads out on the shelf, from day to day... Just like the cartoon! haha. I still prefer the M.A.S.S. CC's helmet with the stripe, but the hooded looks very cool too). The ONLY thing I hate about the head is that it's molded in yellow (YELLOW?!?!? WHY?!?!?) and you can see the underside slightly. Why not blue, I have no idea. It makes absolutely no sense to me. I am glad to finally get a Cobra emblem on the mask though. The color isn't as dark (or doesn't seem to be) as the single-carded hooded CC. I like that sculpt, I just prefer the V1 CC color scheme better. The slightly-darker hood from the Comic pack looks fantastic on him now.

The CG body looks great blue... It looks very military. But the belt kills me. I wish that sword scabbard was removable from the rest of the belt. It's like Transformers "kibble", just gets in the way. I don't want to cut it off though. The mustard yellow on the web gear (same as the head! WHY!) looks terrible too. I wish it was more gold, closer to the single-carded hooded CC. The mold of the web gear is nice though.

While I like the figure overall, he's not "G1" enough for the rest of my 25th figures I have opened. I'm not a fan of Battle Armor CC anymore (as a kid, I thought he was awesome... The new 25th is one of the best sculpts, he just doesn't fit in with the others, if you ask me... much like IG Destro... Good sculpt, but he doesn't fit with the earlier figures if you ask me). And this one looks a lot like my "favorite" default CC as a kid... The Battle Corp CC with the talking backpack... Although now I don't like the look as much. So his headless body will currently sit in my "spare Joe" collection, loaning the emblem-ed hood to V1 CC.

Tripwire is awesome. I had him as a kid, but never really liked him much. The new one is a FANTASTIC update. Still don't care for him much as a character, but the figure looks great, and I love the more muted military color scheme. I like Flash too, but the bright orange-y red kills it for me. Tripwire feels a lot more uniform with the rest of my early Joes, which is a plus for me. So the mold works much better on Tripwire. The big armored helmet and pads make sense on him, and he's a great figure.

i really wish they'd gone Darker with this CC ~ i jsut got to this part of the comics last weekend (99+) and he was generally colored anywhere from Black to dark grey to really dark blue. I like this CC a lot, but darker and like Mandingo_Rex said, gold or silver web gear instead of mustard would have gone a long ways to making my personal perfect CC.

If someone doesn't like the CC, pop one of the Scarred Cobra Officer's heads on on him and take off the webgear. He just needs a belt, and you've got a cool looking Cobra General or something of the like.

The red face mask looks better, it helps pick up the red stripes on the wrists. The blues and reds match perfectly.
