There was a japanese segment called "Machine Robor Chronos" which was based on an OVA of the same name and ENTIRELY different than the gobots brought over here. The toys were on par if not more advanced than the g1 transformers. I know its hard to believe now, but its true once you see them. One of them is so rare and goes for a bunch on ebay.

I'm sure if you removed all the hype, packaging, the characterization, and just judged both Transformers and Gobots on their toy merits, there would be more similarities than differences.

When I was growing up, our neighborhood had this communal box of transforming robots. One kid would "own it" for a few weeks, then it would move on to the next kid, and then the next. Seriously. It was truly a bizarre thing.

No one would ever think to give up a SW figure or a Joe, but kids in my town got really fickle about the bots. Even when I got the bot-box (and added to it*) I gave it to a kid down the street who later handed it off to someone else. That box literally had 8 previous owners before I lost track of it.

The point is that even though I grew up with them and watched all the toons, to this day, I don't know the difference between a Transformer and Gobot. Sure, I know Leader-1 from Prime. . .but very little else. And it didn't matter much since we mixed 'em together anyway.

*Everyone added a bot or 2 to it. My contributions were the little Japanese Valkyries I found at an Oriental laundromat.

I went through a phase in 86 for about a year where I collected these things heavy! Mainly because they were alot cheaper than transformers, but also because the cartoon was on every day after school. I remember the first cartoon voices I ever replicated were some of these lame ass robots like scooter, cop-tur, and turbo! lol

I remember watching the cartoon as a kid and thinking to myself "How come lasers come out of their hands and not guns like the transformers?!?...they suck!!" :D

In general, Transformers > Gobots. The only exception is for many smaller Transformers toys in comparison with some of the gobots of the same size. There are some that seriously kick ass; better articulation, transformation, detail, etc.

The best ones didn't come to the US. There's a whole line of two-figure combiners that were only on Japan and maybe Europe. They're pricey though, $50 to $200, possibly more.

C'mon, Gobots did have some redeeming qualities. Too bad more of the JPN exclusive Machine Robo stuff didn't come out in the west as there was some really cool stuff.

I love the Gobots....Course I also love Rock Lords so my sanity may be in question :D

I know what you mean!!

Fossil Lord!! That's a kick ass piece. I do hope to have one someday. They tend to show up online with the box, which is great since it displays so well.
