I've contemplated getting the LOTR Blu-Ray Extended edition. I have the extended edition on DVD, and my Blu-Ray player is one of those that upgrades a DVD picture, so my DVDs look good, but I was wondering if the Blu-Ray extended edition has scenes or material that the DVD doesn't have, and if so, is it worth it?

They'll likely do another one..all of the extras are just DVD. The bluray picture is very good, but it is the same as the DVD set lengthwise.
I got mine for like $55 or 60 at Best Buy so I went ahead and got it.

Do they really need to extend those movies any further? Wasn't the directors cuts 4 hours?

I have the theatrical editions on Blu-Ray and the picture and sound quality blows the crap out of the DVD releases, even with upscaling.

As for content though, unless you're somebody who gets excited about picture quality and HD sound and techie stuff, the DVDs have the same content as the Blu-Rays.

LOTR extended edition blu-ray set includes the Costa Botes documentaries that were originally only available on the "limited edition" DVD sets (the ones with both theatrical and director cuts on the same double sided disc). Bonus feature wise that is the only difference from the LOTR extended edition DVDs.

One day I decided to watch my bro's LOTR extended edition Wal-mart DVDs and man... I did not like the new scenes at all. I mean almost every new/extended scene was unnecessary IMO.

Especially with The Two Towers... IMO the new and extended scenes really slowed the pace of the movie... IMO the theatrical releases are the better versions of all three films.

I couldn't disagree more on the second paragraph, though it's obvious the extended scenes weren't "necessary" (well, except for the alternate beginning to Return of the King...they really -did- need that) since they weren't included in the theatrical cuts to begin with.

Still, I think the extra breathing room and character development in the extended scenes only makes the movies better. Yeah, you're in for a long haul, but IMO totally worth it. I don't even own the theatrical editions.

I would agree. Give me more LOTR goodness. :) The movie is already pretty long, might as well go all in.

I just wish they'd included Tom Bombadil, the Barrowdowns and the Scouring of the Shire.

Bombadil I can live without. It's a weird segment even in the book and ultimately has no real bearing on...anything. The Barrow Downs and the Scouring would have been good additions...though the Scouring of the Shire would practically be a movie in and of itself...and not a very happy one.

I like Tom Bombadil!

And yeah, the Scouring would have been fairly epic (and as you say sad) but it would still be cool to see just how much the Hobbits - including the Shire residents - could do when pushed to it.

I agree. Couple times a year, my wife and I sit down and watch all 3 special extended versions back-to-back-to-back. We do the same thing with all 6 Star Wars too.

I've been holding out on getting a blu-ray player. But if they put out an extended, extended LOTR, with even more scenes, then I'll break down.

I've seen the theatrical release trilogy on blu-ray at Ross for $29.99.
