View Full Version : How many Cobra Troopers is too much?

Ok, so the 25th Anniversary figures reintroduced me to Joes. It's like "Yeah son, let get you a Transformer after that awesome movie and play with them . . . But, what's this? Oh my god, is that . . . I mean . . . that can't be. Is that the master ninja duo team by which all ninjas aspire to follow? That is. . . it's Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow. And what's this? Flint, and . . . and. . . must get them all."

Anyway, after my geekgasm, I got back into it and bought some Cobra Troopers. I'm trying to set up a scenario battle between my kids and me. Yeah, I'm 34 and still play with toys. Sue me. So, I buy these Wave 2 troopers and I'm up to 11. I keep finding them all over the place where I live and when I travel for business. I think I'm broken. I can't stop buying them. Sure they don't have the red cobra emblem but who cares?

How much is enough? Should I stop? I have four cobra officers I've found back in wave 1 and three troopers from the cobra sets (for which I paid $8 because of a price snafu on the retailers part). That's four officers and 14 troops. Hmmm, if I set up five man teams, that's one officer for each team. I guess I need just two more and each one will have its own officer.

Am I normal? Scratch that. Is it normal for a collector to buy multiples of the troops?

Is there something you guys just can't stop getting as you build your awesome armies?

Thanks.

I'm nothing like that. First of all, my kids don't get to play with these, just me (except a few extras from the cobra packs). Second, I don't have that many troopers. I'm up to 4 officers and just 4 troopers because I can't find as many.

So you see, we're nothing alike.:)

I can't even find the Officer or any extra troopers yet. I can see myself picking up a few of each. It's just a matter of how many is too many to you really. If I could find as many as you have, then I would certainly be in the same situation. But I can't find anything more than what I have.

more power to you. i was able to find 30 snake eyes 35 storm shadows 9 troopers from wave 2 and 4 officers from wave 1. hey were adults now and if you have the budget go for it. i know i am, every chance i get. i believe these are a great investment as well. there are alot of resellers and ebay sellers here in my town and they are viscious, gargantua, and ferocious. i'm buying whatever i can get my hands on for my collection and my sons collection. He will be 2 this month and already has an interest.
my pocket book when i was a child limited me to only one character each. well now as an adult and at $4.50, i'm going to get mine, plus the last 20 years of child hood memories and pleasant visions of the o.g. toys and packaging and hasbro a billion dollar company finally got the sense to bring em back finally back......go get em all.....lol

Holy Cow, you bought 30 Snake Eyes and 35 Storm Shadows? What could you possibly do with all of them? I'm not judging. I'm just trying to understand.

I have 12 officers, 1 5-pack trooper, and 3 wave 2 troopers. My son and I are having a blast with these new Joes. They see "action" everyday. Looking forward to finding wave three and the second Cobra 5 pack. We have a scenario already lined up for them. My son has been reading my old Joe comics and asking when we'll see figures for some of the characters so he can reenact some of the issues. I'm starting to sell off some of my other hobbies to fund the large Crimson Guard army we're planning.

I guess most of us are in the same boat, i remember playing with the GI Joes and Transformers as a kid but never really had the "pocket book" to afford them, so i was off playing with a neighbor of mine who's parents bought him everything.

20+ years later (i'm 31) and they bring back thes old school repackaged joes with more articulation. Man, i had a geekgasm myself and now the plus side, able to purchase them myself. Its awesome!

I originally thought that i'd pick up 2 sets (one to open and store) but since these are selling like hot cakes.... as a collector, it doesn't seem like a bad idea to add a couple more. Especially if found at the store and not pay the eBay prices.

Once the Crimson Guards come out, i'm sure we're going to be in some purchasing wars... I dig those figures, always have!

I'm current and only need the Cobra Trooper figure to complete my set, until wave 3 actually is released (other than on Ebay ~ Bakersfield is too far of a drive)

I'm sure each one you purchase makes that smile on your son's face grow even larger....so I say keep going!!

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only 30-something who loves playing joes with their son. Best part of it all....having access to someone with the same interest 24-7.

Are they really that hard to find? They're like weeds over here. I keep seeing them pop up and I just gotta pull them free.

I just realized that this sounded like I was bragging. Anyway, good luck to everyone. As I keep traveling with work, I'll post where I find them.

And, I checked ebay to see how they were selling. Oh man, that should be a crime. People pay $15 bucks of more for each one?

Oh, and Toynewsi.com is calling them Viper Glider troopers. What is that all about? Don't they have to have to come with a glider to be called that?

Hard doesn't even begin to describe it. My week to week search usually includes 5 Wal-Marts (1 of which is 5 min away and I check every night), 2 Targets, 2 TRUs, and 1 K-Mart. I have currently found Wave 1 once (aside from CC, SS, SE) and have only 1 officer. I've now found Wave 2 once - 4 cases and all the troopers were gone.

Soo.. currently. 1 Officer. 1 boxset trooper. My army is more like a small club.

Gaelinic, TNI is prolly calling them that because they have the silver logo like the Viper Glider Pilot.

I wouldn't worry about the "how much is too much" question. If your army can line up in group formation so deep that you can't see any troops in the back, then you have too much. Yeah, I've seen that.

Never buy more than you can visualize in display or else you're hoarding, plain and simple.

Otherwise, never buy more than Snake Eyes can kill at once all by himself. :D

I say if your budget allows you to buy as many troops you want then go nuts.

And also, if your budget allows you to buy me troops, feel free to go nuts there as well.

I called that obsession and that is perfectly normal. Heck, the more we buy the more Joes' we will see. Hopefully, aside from the Joe Con, vehicles and play set down the road in '08.

I don't consider myself an army builder, but there's been so many great Cobra trooper figures throughout the 25th/modern era line that I think I now own more Cobra figures than Joes. I typically only buy one of each Joe.

I have army built BATs and Alley Vipers though. Love 'em!

I moved six months ago and still have all my Joes in boxes. I don't know how many troopers and officers I own exactly but I think it's like eighty troopers and about twenty officers. I also have about forty crimson guard and twenty vipers and ten bats. Can wait to get them out of the boxes.

Yes I do, and that is why I now army build. Moms you have to love them; but they just don't get boys toys. Although I try to keep it reasonable when it comes to my army building. Usually I do not exceed 12 of a certain type of trooper, unless they are uber cool. But, I did go nuts on the POC/30th Cobra Trooper I currently have 40 of them( 38 loose, 2 carded ). :P

I usually try to stick to 5 "specialized" Cobra soldiers (Vipers, Ninjas, Eels, etc.), and with my favorite toy line, Minimates (http://minimatedatabase.com/), my limit is 10 each.

But I have about 20 Star Wars Clone Wars Clone Troopers, and 40 Renegades Cobra Troopers, and I don't want to stop any time soon, lol. Though, I really need more than 8 Battle Droids for my Clones to face off against, lol. ~_~"

I tried to stay away from the sickness that is army building, but I'm being roped in. Fortunately, I've been able to keep it sensible. Usually I cap it at 5, although I've gone a little crazy with the retaliation Joe troopers. I don't really like the blueshirts, but I have 5 of the DG troopers, because they look awesome.
