My son was bugging me for a Cobra Base...a suitable base (we both grew tired of Cobra Mtn.)...so came up with this.

It is an original joe HQ...with two extra bays. I trimmed them down to fit flush. Added some forward perimeter guns (from Ice Snake) and a BTR missile launcher seated on a swivel block (launcher rotates). Painted it Royal Blue (Walmart brand paint) and got some custom Cobra logo decals from GIJoe Heaven, also some decals from a TerrorDrome sheet.

I decided to not stop with the base...figured to go all out. Repainted a LAW, Air Defense system, Vamp/Whirlwind set, World Peacekeeper humvees and a Corps Humvee.

My son loves it..and I'm very please at how it turned out.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again & again & again...

That's one of the most wicked playsets I've EVER seen!

From the custom Motor Pool, to the extensions on the base itself...

Oh, did I mention all the Viper Goodness manning the base? ;)

Great Job, Apac! (but you knew that already :D )

Very nice work. Even though I've preferred black, red, and purple when it comes to COBRA's colors it's a fine base. Although I think I'm more intrigued that your son is into GI Joe so much.

Thanks fellas!!

And as for my son...well, he is the reason I got back into collecting. Long story short...I was off work due to an injury, went into the attic for something (wife wanted something...don't remember to this day what it was, lol)..while looking, my son finds a box with my childhood Joes. When he seen them...he had the look in his eyes that I had when I first seen them. From that point on...he was hooked, and got me back into it. He is only 5 yrs old now (will be 6 this week)...and he was only 3 at the time he seen Joes. I started to give him some of my vehicles...then seen the value of them online, and took them back (once he gets a bit bigger, he will get them all).

So...from that point on I have been buying Joes for him. Got him a GI Joe backpack and two vintage lunch boxes to take for kindergarten. He lit a fire in the other kids, they are always asking him about his and his dad's joes.

They have show and tell every week in school..."things that begin with the letter __", he always takes a joe if he can.

Its been a great experience...one that I hope continues for a long, long time. He helps me with customizing...and it is great to have someone in the same house to play Joes with LOL.

I have two collections going for him...one that he gets via gifts (x-mas, easter, birthdays, good report cards) that he opens...and a sealed collection that I have put away for him. I try to get two of everything new that I find to keep both collections the same. My hope is to one day give it to him...so he can pass it on to his son and have as much fun as I am with him.

As for S6...I know its intended for kids and is kid tested. Well, my son is the variable...he prefers the 3.75" scale. He sees all the vehicles/playsets for 3.75" scale, and well...to put it in his words " I like the little ones better."

Hey Apac,

Great job!!!!

I got a few questions:

1.) what kind of blue paint did use on playset and vehicles?

2.) where did you find those other two jeeps with the covers?

Again, very nice piece of work congrats to you and your son on a great base for COBRA!!!!!!

Thanks Flash.

The paint is Walmart brand Royal Blue Spray paint. Its the closest match I have found to Cobra blue...and its cheap, under a buck a can.

The Humvees with the covers are from the World Peacekeeper line ...I found them at BigLots store.

That's an awesome playset, man. Brings back memories of when I had all my old Joe stuff and a ton of the vehicles! You did a great job on the customization.

Also, that's a great story about your son. It's always a wonderful thing to pass on the things that brought you joy as a kid on to your kids. :)

I also love how he's into the smaller figures. That was one of the things I found unique about GI Joes as kid(and still do): They could fit inside vehicles, battle stations and bases. I always thought that was so cool.

Again, great work on the Cobra Viper Pit!

Hey Flint! Not to derail the thread, but when is the PA meet? Maybe you can start a thread about it! Apac posted pictures of his time with you guys last year, and it looked like a lot of fun! :D

If Apac brings the Viper Pit, I'm bringing the IRON ONSLAUGHT!

That is a good question as to when it is. There are supposed to be 2 of them the first being the picnic again, the second like a weekend event. May is the picnic I don't know what weekend(dates) it hasn't been decided yet. I will make sure I share the info as soon as I find out for sures.

On a similar note is there a link to those pics from last years meet ?

I think we will bring the Viper Pit up...with the artillery and motor pool to the meet. Sadly, that is most of the customizing I did since the last meet. I got alot of stuff I want to start up this year...the temple is definately tops on the list.

I'll look for the link at CI for the pics (it may of been before the change-over..again) , I know I still have the pics on my photobucket account.

CIAD was correct...the old thread didn't survive the wipe, so I put them in the thread about this years meet.

That is simply beautiful! Makes me wish I still had my old HQ I received when I was 6 or 7.

May I ask how long it took for the walls of the HQ to dry once you sprayed them down? I've never customized anything before, but that definately gives me some ideas.

It didn't take long at all. I did put a couple coats on them though. I was usually painting them before I would go to bed...and let them dry overnight, but most spray paint dries pretty quickly, but the longer you let it sit before handling the better. After they were painted blue...i hit them with a matte clear coat which dries quickly also...but protects the paint from chipping off.

Have fun with the customizing...and be sure to show us pics of your project when done.

Hey Apac,

With the Cobra Temple you're going to build this year....do you plan to incorporate the Viper Pit in to it somehow? Or will this be a "stand alone" base next to the Temple?

apacolypse
04-07-2007, 01:48 PM
I'm thinking it will be a stand alone base....somewhat of a trainining facility for Viper candidates.

I thought about incorporating it with the temple when you mentioned that before...but as you know, I changed the plans for the temple several times and that was hindering production. If I start to incorporate the viper pit to the temple plans...who knows when it will see production. LOL

I checked today @ my local Super Wal*Mart and I couldn't find that paint you used. Is it located in the toys by the models or in the regular paint section? Also, any idea what brand it is. I'll have to wait until we get into our new house at the end of the month before I do anything, but I'd like to pick up the supplies before hand.

apacolypse
04-09-2007, 08:38 PM
Its located in the regular paint aisle...not in the hobby or model paint section. Its walmart's spray paint brand: "ColorPlace", Royal Blue 20001 is the shelf tag for it, its cheap..under a buck a can.

The matte clear coat is more expensive...and its a name brand. That goes for a little under 4 bucks a can here...but one can should be plenty for the project.

You need a few Cobra Bunkers and Surveillance Ports to flank that base.

I think a Coastal Defender would look good given a Cobra repaint too.

The joes in the brig...aren't joes, they were some offbrand guys that came with some of the humvees...from the PTE line.

The armored humvee is the new Corps Humvee sold at Walmart...it comes in a mustard yellow color.

It took couple weeks of just working on it a couple hours in the nights. The base was done in just a couple days...but we kept adding to the motorpool with it...and then the outside armaments. Honestly my son and I were having so much fun that we just kept adding stuff to it.

My son is who got me back into Joes...and I'm happy he did. It is great to bond with him with something that I loved as a child. It is equally as cool to not only come to the boards and talk Joes...but have someone on hand in the house who shares just as much enthusiasm.
