View Full Version : ThunderCats 4'' Lion-O Review

Fans of The ThunderCats will dig this figure, I'm sure. He's not much in the way of a high-end collectible but if you're looking for a robust plaything or you just like the designs, you could do a lot worse.

I like Thundercats. Saw these at Toys R Us and decided to pass on the toy line. I would love to pick up Voltron line. But they are so pricey that I would feel wrong buying them as I feel it would support the high pricess Matel is trying to get out of the toy line. At $15 bucks per driver and then like 40 for each Lion.....gulp!
Yeah, I like this Lion-O figure (and the show!) but not enough to collect them...

Nice review, not sure how I can add them to my Joe-universe.

I have to say that for bandai toys they arent half bad. I have lion-o and cheetara and they are pretty cool. I know the feelin on the voltron stuff. In addtion to the over inflated prices...they are nto in general retail...and SVEN (the only team member i really gave a crap about) is a bullcrap sub-only fig. way to stick it to the fans matty.
Good review on lion-o. look forwards to your thoughts on the thundertank.

Thanks. TBH I'm not sure I'll be getting the Thundertank. I'm kind of on the fence about the line. Whilst they're good toys they're not great collectibles and I don't really see myself choosing them over, say, Joes or Marvel Universe figures...
We'll see, I guess...

Another great toy review. One of the rare cases where pictures do more justice than seeing this in person. I spotted this at TRU a couple of days ago and was very disappointed with every Thundercats item there. Was hoping to find the classic series and only saw the larger Lion-O that was pretty much junk.

My main gripe is with the pegs and shoulder joints that are not cast (or at least painted) in the proper colour scheme of its limbs. Cost efficient, maybe...lazy, YES!

Thanks - glad you enjoyed it.
And he's a figure you can get some pretty good poses out of, even with the limited articulation.

Very true. I was going to draw attention to that but I thought the photos spoke for themselves in that regard. But yes, it's not a great look.

The face tampo transfer looks good. And as a kids' toy he's pretty neat. I just wouldn't - and won't be - collecting them.

I like the magnetic feature on the thunder tank that allows the motorcycles to stick on the side. I haven't picked them up yet, but it seemed like a nice feature. This line does seem more playable than many toy lines. It is the happy medium between ultra posable Joes and the DCU stick figures.

I'm only getting the classic Lion-o and passing on everything else.

This is how I feel. I collect nothing but Joe. Lion-O isn't a Joe so... I', just kidding. I don't have the money for another line I stick to the Best of the BEST, G.I. Joe. I like some of the Thunder Cats stuff but it is not for me.

Nice review, very detailed as usual.
As i told to a friend, these new figs remind me of my childhood...they have the same level of sculpt.
I guess these are intended for kids to play.
I can understand the lack of certain articulation, and i can deal with it, but the sculpt... had it been better, it would have been the same for kids, while capturing the attention of collectors.
The arms looks shapeless, for example. They lack completely the simplification of the toon, it's just a bunch of liitle blobs of plastic.
Look at the feet...these don't resemble the mangaish fingers, they look like a bunch of sausages.
Pity, cos i LOVE the new designs. But these toys are frankly horrible. They don't stand today's market quality.

I picked up a 4" Cheetara thinking i was going to use the head for a new covergirl, till i opened up and found a damn square cut out of the hair on the back side. epic fail or perhaps i may cut the hair down and give a shorter hair cut not sure yet. but what the hell is up with that square??????

They're certainly designed to be played with, for sure. They feel very sturdy and there's no worry of anything really getting lost (although the claw shield can be a bit of a pain to get to stay on at times...)

The $15 price tag was just a little too much for me...

I agree to an extent. I collect Joes and MU figures and pick-up the odd sideline but they're the two I keep coming back to, as I've really not found any other line that has the production quality or appeal to beat them.

What I find weird is that the ''classic'' line doesn't seem any more detailed. I'd have expected Bandai to do this line, you know, for kids, and then the classics with a modern production spin for collectors. I guess they want to keep the cartoon look rather than do something a little more interesting/risky...

That's bizarre... I know her long hair might make it harder to create a figure of her but surely there was a better way!

I'm not too keen on the updated look and that is what is going to stop me from collecting this line. Had these been the classic figures in 4" scale, I'd have been all over them.
I got nothing against updating, but I just don't dig what they did here.
However, I am on the fence about the Thundertank. That looks to have some great customizing potential.

I agree with you. Joe's and MU for me. Started with TF's then realized that most of the Classics are pretty cheap in quality then went to MU and now im on Joe's more than anything.
The Bandai, figuarts, and Play Arts figures are awesome but a little pricey at 40-60 a pop. I'd love to see you do reviews on some of these, the DragonballZ line, Street Fighter 2, etc.

Yeah, I don't understand why they're making them all at different scales (I know the originals were 6''?) - it just seems like they could've saved themselves some work by standardising the scale between update and classic lines...

I've been eyeing those SFII figures. They look pretty amazing. We'll see what happens...
