Great review.. although I feel the need to correct the Ace construction..
Arms and lower legs are from POC Skydive (also found in the cancelled ROC Ripcord)
Torso and Parachute pack are from Resolute 5 pack Duke (Also used for Air Raid w/ Sky Sweeper)
Upper legs, head and top harness are from the 25th Ace
Lower Harness 25th and ROC Paraviper
Helmet is original new sculpt (Also doesn't fit the head very well and helps to dremel some of the material out to fit better)

That one seater cockpit totally ruins the whole thing for me. No sale! No need to waste my money on unnecessary updates like this. I might pick one up to make into Skywarp if I find them on clearance after the holidays. But no way I'll pay full price, especially when the Clone Attack Shuttle is sitting right next to it.
I'm gonna stick with my vintage *correct* 2 seater with a set of new ME decals.

Sorry mixed the names for Skydive with Airwave. sheesh Hasbro should at least give new names for trans and joe merchandise then to avoid duplicates :P

It really doesn't take much to turn this into a 2 seater.. As a remake, it really isn't bad. My biggest complaint which is mentioned in this review are that the missiles tend to fall off.. a lot. I just dremeled down the base of the post to provide more peg for them to grip onto.
I plan to really customize one of these..
make it seat 2, dual canopies and fix the wing/landing gear issue to be both independent.
But this will come after my first custom of one.. a Night Boomer.

Nice review I have two now and plan on getting more. The 2 seat thing doesn't really bother me at all! The missiles falling off is a bit annoying but other then that I'm really happy with it over all and glad they made it seeing as I didn't have one as a kid and wouldn't pay ebay prices to get one as I had no attachment to it

E-81 Aero Vulcan Gatling CannonOkay, so this is interesting...
I too, always thought that was a spare fuel pod. The sticker that goes on it ("HP-10XF" with Danger! notice) doesn't mean anything to me.
I was trying to figure out where you got the information that it was supposed to be a Gatling cannon and found the original blueprints on yojoe.com where it indeed lists the "pod" as an additional gun.
YOJOE.COM | Combat Jet Skystriker [XP-14F] (http://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/83/skystriker/skystriker_blueprints.shtml)
This is intriguing because try as I might, google couldn't help me find any other reference to the "E-81 Aero Vulcan Gatling Cannon" other than the Sky Striker mention.
On another note the SDCC Starscream has that pod as his Null Cannon, which I guess makes more sense now.
Nice review!

It really surprised me as well. all along i taught it was a fuel tank. I base some of my reviews from the old blueprints, and yes you can find these at yojoe.com.
I dont have an SDCC Starscream yet so cant comment. :(

I do have to say this, my original SS has held up through years of play and storage. Nothing has broken or yellowed over the years. About 6 years ago I pulled everything out of boxes and cleaned them up and displayed them. One of these days Id like to clean off the old decals and install new ones. I got the new SS, the SDCC Screamer version, and honestly, I prefer my original. It just seems better built when I have them both in hand. My Screamer version has problems with the missiles staying on when I move it. Its a cool jet and all, and dont get me wrong, I love it. Looking forward to getting at least 3 of the new SS when and if I find them. I guess Im just more into old school Joes.

Great review with great pics! I would give the jet a 10 if it wasn't for the missiles. This is a huge issue. Yes there are ways to make it better (Which I have yet to do but plan on doing) but we shouldn't have to do such things. When my son and I play were lucky if we get the jet 3 feet off the ground before one or more of the missiles falls off. Very frustrating. Other then the missiles falling off it is really a great jet and I have the Original from childhood.
Again great review. Had fun reading and looking. :o)

I used to read the blue prints A LOT as a kid. Always knew that was a cannon. Pretty sure somewhere on the box or instructions of the old SS it also says it is a "handle for play" but that from memory...
I dunno...yea..its cool, but I'm in the 2 seater camp. That was such a huge deal for me as a kid. Ace would always tell his RIO to punch out and he would ride it as far as he could...if the fig can't even hold the controls then why in the hell have em? Sure it looks nice, but I would go for no detail with 2 seats than this config.
Missiles falling off...
I mean...you can SEE they are trying...but they just keep missing the Target by a lil bit.
Anyone have actual dimensions on size comparison to the OG?
Anyways, great review sir.

Your 1983 Skystriker doesn't look yellowed. Why did you say it suffers from yellowing?

To answer how yellow it can get (photos from fadebl):

As for a side by side shot of the skystrikers; you can refer to this:

Daniel,
Did you have to make any other modifications to get the Tomahawk seat into the Sky Striker? I have my vintage SkyStriker and want it to accomodate the 25th & POC figures (no ROC is worth to copilot it). Once I get a dremel I'll grind off the back peg for Comic Pack Ace to fit comfortably.
Well-presented and well-written review. I did feel there was a slight bias towards the new Striker though. I noted the words 'better build' used when referencing the new; and 'prone to breakage' when referencing the old. How many of your vintage Skystrikers have you broken? Also, the port side Vulcan you say is better molded on the new SS was molded the same way on later releases of the vintage SS, so this point cannot be held against the vintage version. In any case, in my opinion, the versions both new and old with the grating is fugly and un-aerodynamic.
I could go on... but won't. I guess I'm not a fan of people holding the 30th Anni version higher than the classic. I find it inferior in so many ways. No contest.

Yup, made mods coz i was frustrated with how 25th figures cant fit with the parachute seats. Made a mod by simply removing the 2nd parachute seat of the vintage one, and replacing it with a tomahawk seat instead. Its a soft mod, just blue-tacked the seat into the cavity, and clipped of the backpack peg so that the figure can seat properly. Clipping using side cutters is a faster way than using the dremel, just to suggest of course :)
Thanks for viewing!

Actually the better build for me was just simply the assembly of the skystriker. The older one is basically almost one piece, and its quite hard to store. The newer one can have its fins and wings disassembled for quick storage. I got 2 vintage ones before as carcasses, mostly yellowed, with their hind fins cracked due to rough play. Tried restoring them yet i found it futile with the ebay rates on parts, concluded I rather get a complete one for the cost, which i eventually did.
Its fine bro, to each his own. In my case, i gave a slight difference in the rating because I still like the vintage skystriker. It has a plastic quality you wont find in the newer stock, better missile slots, two seater cockpit and the nostalgia feel. I would like to rate the 30th as a new craft, they might be similar though their construction and mold is very different. If thats the case i could have sold my vintage off just to get 3 more skystrikers, yet i didnt coz I still love it :)

Both Skystrikers were from my personal collection, and as i said, was lucky to get a 1983 skystrikers thats nearly mint and clean white. As for the older skystrikers i tried to restore, i gave up and at a particular time gave them to my kids to play instead. This is the reason why i said they suffer from yellowing, since I kept this carcass on display for more than a decade. I used that as a conclusion that the vintage do get yellowed over time, unless you have it stored away from sunlight.
