Brendan Fraser will have at least a bit role in “G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra,” when the long-awaited film arrives in theaters late next summer.

Fraser reluctantly revealed as much during a New York interview for “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” which, by the way, might be this summer’s coolest film for kids, particularly with its “Real D” 3-D effects.

“Oh, you outed me, dude,” Fraser said after being asked about his “G.I. Joe” appearance.
However, when I showed him that the role was listed in “Journey” press notes, anyway, the good-guy action-film hero talked more about it:

“ 'G.I. Joe' is a cameo that I begged (producer) Bob Ducsay for.
"Stephen Sommers (helmer on Fraser's first two "Mummy" films) was going to direct and called me when I was in Italy doing 'Inkheart,' and I was like, 'Awesome!' Then he said, 'I'm not going to direct.' I said 'Please?' I think he had a few more irons in the fire.

“Later, we were in Shanghai and Bob had a big old grin on his face. I was like 'What?' And he said, 'We just got the green light from Paramount to do ‘Joe.’” This was before the (Writers Guild) strike and everything.

“ I said, 'Congratulations, can I be in it?' He took me seriously. He kind of gave me an open ticket to do whatever I wanted. My character choice is that I am Rick O'Connell's great, great grandson.”

(WTF ___ WHY THE HELL WOULD HE JUST BE ALLOWED TO MAKE UP HIS CHARACTER BEING RICK O'CONNELL'S GRANDSON...WHAT A @#$$ing JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!)

Even people who never played war with toy Army soldiers likely know that Rick O’Connell is the character Fraser plays in "The Mummy" films, including "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," due Aug. 1. The actor said he asked for the part because he had his own G.I. Joe growing up as the son of an executive who moved his family all over North America.

“Hey, I was a red blooded, American, Canadian kid,” he concluded, running out of the interview room before giving away too much more. “My G.I. Joe wound up twisting from a tree from his parachute for an entire winter. I loved him!”

Look for more here on “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and Fraser’s attractive co-star, Anita Briem, before it opens July 11.

Meanwhile, read my review of this week's big family film, the animated "WAll-E," whose director talks with me about his cute little love story at MovieZen and in the Sun News.

Hmmm, doesn't seem right. I wonder if he was just saying that to dodge the question again.

So...when did Sommers decline directing GI Joe? I'm sure this is just Frasier joking around

His grandson could be anyone.

Craig S. Mc'Connel could become Craig S. O'Connel

Oh good grief this is disastrous news!

Nah. Actually don't understand why I "won't like this". Most actors create 'back-story' for their characters that viewers will never pick up on simply to help their performance.
"Worse" case scenario and this isn't Fraser mucking about, I still shrug my shoulders and say "Yeah, so?"

You are fine with just adding and making up characters for this Joe movie...dont you think there is enough characters to pick from in the Joe Universe...this is a Joe movie, why cant they stick to original characters that made GIJOE what it is today...

Right, so more people can complain that a "already established Joe character" got less screen time than Marlon Wayans should have got. I hope it is a made up a character.

Brendan Fraser is one of the worst actors I've seen. I mean really. He is just terrible.

Because the GI Joe franchise has been 'making up' new characters to replace older ones since it began (some weren't even available as toys: Sparks, Cool Breeze etc.), and the film is entitled to do the same. Fraser will still be a Joe and besides, the haters will still hate no matter who he plays.

So yes, "yeah so?" still stands.

I haven't seen him in that much but thought he made a respectable hero in 'The Mummy', was good in 'Monkeybone' & 'Scrubs', and excellent in 'Gods and Monsters'.
I guess it depends on the role he's playing.

It's not a new character.

Does everyone know who Craig O'Connell is?

He has a badass motorcycle? Plays guitar?

Likes to "Rock 'n' Roll" on the bass and the M-60?

HELLO PEOPLE!!!

HELLO PEOPLE!!!

I don't know about you, but my Rock N Roll figure says "Craig S. McConnell", not "O'Connell" on it.

I think some folks are making too much of Brendan Fraser just goofing around in an interview. "His decision" that his character is another character's grandson is not a canon decision made by the film-makers.

LOL, they guy's line delivery is like he's reading stereo instructions to a dumb child! But I guess everyone has their favorites?

Didn't he say in a different interview that he would be driving a "bitchin' motorcycle"? Like the one Rock n' Roll drives possibly?

Who cares!!??!! I mean really! It's probably gonna be some 1 1/2 minute cameo that won't really amount to anything more than a one liner joke or something! It sounds to me like he just wanted to be a part of the film and, as a favor, they let him. I don't see the importance. Not that I don't like the guy. I just don't think he'll be a factor in the movie. Just my opinion!
