View Full Version : Does it have the power? A Joe fan script review of the He-Man movie!!

So, I bring you new info on the pretty freaking good script of GRAYSKULL: Masters of the Universe
Okay, we'll start off with the Pros, Cons and the ???
Pros-
The basic storyline of He-Man is intact, two swords, Grayskull and etc.
He-Man, Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, Trap-Jaw, Man-At-Arms, Randor, The Sorcceress, Zodak, Mekanek, Fisto, Teela and Battle Cat are all here!!!
Good build up, EPIC feel. Piss of, LOTR, kind of epic feel.
Good humor
Great action, especially at the end.
Love epilogues... Ah, good old fashioned "Wait, there will bew a number 2!!!!"
Tri-Klops and Trap Jaw are sweet.
Very adult, very violent!
A non corny version of BAttle Cat and Panthor!!!
Eh---
No reference to He-Man as HE-MAN. There are references, but...Not a bad thing, as he's still called Adam.
It is a "He-Man Begins" sttory, and while it works VERY WELL, you do have to wait tell the end to see Skeletor's face and hear those famous words...
Skeletor's chrome face mask sounds cool, but it's not SKELETOR to me... However, it's a chromes SKULL mask, so I'll wait and see.
Cons
The aeforementioned "waiting" to see He-man and Skeletor's face... Still, they call it build up...
A few characters who I wouldn't have offed were offed... Grrr....
No mentions of the He-Man/Teela romance, but then again, it;s the first of a trilogy, and it's not exactly the most solid storyline, and even that statement is arguable...
Seriously, they offed a LOT of people. Over five...
We have to wait to see it, lol. It seems pretty good!
There's more I'd love to write, but I need to get ready for work. More to come.

So do we know anything on the casting on this? John Woo is no longer a part of it, right?

all they have is the script at this point, nobody attached. LatinoReview made a good point about Silver Pictures being a bit gun-shy about going forth with a genre movie like this because how bad Speed Racer bombed for them, but I don't see the two as comparable. Speed Racer was a bad idea which was made arguable 10 years too late. with Transformers and G.I. Joe in theaters, the time is exactly right for MOTU, and having read the script I think it will be a better movie than either of those, both visually and story-wise.

Agreed, Gunslinger. This script follows a well-used ofrmula hat has often produiced fine results, and it follows a classic hero's journey storylinem, as well as having an INCREDIBLE amount of nostalgic value.
Also, I though I heard a rmor that Snyder was going to direct?

for real, if anyone who has the script and is bored enough to be bothered to email it to me, I would gladly repay the action with an internet hug/or handshake. Which ever you would rather like.
Also, lets start throwing names out for possible casts!!!! I love this game!!!
Ill go first!

Ok, this one is a stretch, but Id actually dig it.
Kevin Spacey as Skeletor
Hes got the higher tone voice (not as high as Skeletor obviously, but that could come off a bit dumb in live action)
Hes got that quarky dialogue delivery that is borderline over the top, that I could see as skeletor like
EDIT Ok, his voice isnt exactly high, i guess i just meant he can be "loud" at the right times

I'm all for deaths in something like MOTU. It's like Batman offing the villian in the movies, it takes it to a level the cartoon and comics don't go to because 1) cartoons aimed at the youngsters 2) comic books want the villian to keep coming back. With only 3 (I hope at least) movies it doesn't make sense to have everyone live. Kill TrapJaw in 1 and maybe we get Whiplash in 2 (or whomever) to replace him. Thanks for the info on the movie script, even just the pre-start-up phase on this one gets me happy!

I agree for the most part, but sometimes it sucks to see a great villian get offed, due to the fact of how he could push things into a further direction in possible sequals.
I guess what makes me mad about killing off major villians in most movies (its not as bad nowdays though), is how they try to bring that villian back for the next one.
Or they take a fan favorite side character, and push him in the background constantly, just to kill him off, when he coulda been a cool character to push in another installment.
Of course they dont do that as bad nowdays, probably because it seems like a lot of the more important movies are shot with sequals in mind.

My problem though, is someone who I consider a main character was killed off with out fanfare, and they only had ONE really good scene. It is a waste. It is the only thing I hope gets changed if they do a re-write, which I doubt/hope not.

I also read the script.......awesome is all I can say. This is a great for our generation. Last year transformers. Next year Gijoe and transformers 2. In 2010 we get heman. Voltron is on the way, plus all the marvel and dc movies that are coming out.......Are we getting lucky or what!

A couple of deaths shocked me, but there are a wealth of characters to occupy the sequels, and going that route will make the sequels far fresher than if the same villains returned because it puts the heroes in different scenarios. facing off against Mer-Man or Clawful is a completely different dynamic than fighting Tri-Clops or Trap-Jaw.
having slept on it, the script is easily one of the coolest scripts I've read in a long time. 9.5 out of 10 - I think it is perfect, even though a few bits of dialogue are weak, it just doesn't hurt the script at all. to compare, I'd give G.I. Joe and Transformers about 7.5 out of 10

Agreed. I have no qualms with the script. My one complaint, and yes, it is partially a fanboy one, is the death of a certain one of Skeletor's aids, as it seems like there was so much left unsaid. However, it is always possible for them to return somehow.
Ultimately, I would agree. 9.5 out of 10, if not a full 10.

I don't have much memory of all the characters and their histories, which may be why I love it so much. it presented the characters in a great way that still reminded me of them all from what I do remember. I have no clue where, if at all, any of them differed from their historical presentations.

So I just read it, very very very fun read, takes itself pretty seriously, and I REALLY like that. I would love to discuss some spoilers with you other guys who have read it, but really dont think I should do it in here, should I start a new thread? I REALLY wanna talk about some serious spoiler material and possible openings for a sequel and what not.

Well, the first series of He-man, all the bad guys just kinda 'were', you know. Not much history that I can remember, other than just being there to be bad guys.
The series that came out a few years ago (great watch) has a TON of back story, King Ranor and Keldor, King Greyskull, etc,
This script does differ quite a bit in areas, but it really stays true to the spirit, which I hope GI Joe does...
The back history of the side characters, and how they relate to eachother in the story, fleshes out very well.

Argh! No spoilers! :) As much as it kills me I would sooo love to read the script but I would feel like crap afterwards... like I cheated or something! >>nothing against you script readers, I just like the surprises on the big screen<< I think the only death that would get my undies in a bunch would be Man-At-Arms, that would just not be cool... but i 'would' like to see 2 or 3 villians a movie go down.

I wasnt gonna put any spoilers in here, since this was the first thread brought up about the script, but Im thinking of making a Spoilers allowed thread or something to discuss the script

Yeah, hardcore spoilers in there! Do avoid it if you dont want to know anything, hell in my second post I bring up points about almost every main event that happens in it.
So yeah, do avoid it if you dont wanna know :)
And if you do wanna know the spoilers, I suggest just reading the script before reading any of the lil bullet points I make in the other thread.

Yeah, agreed, but how do places like Latin Review do it, with almost pages quoted pretty much? Of course, whos to say they wont be told something later on.
Im not out to step on anyones toes nor get anyone in trouble, so I have no qualms about taking the heavy spoilers off. Besides, itll make it less tempting for those who are contimplating reading the spoilers or just waiting for the movie (crosses fingers about the movie)
Anyone have any fears that Hwood is gonna seriously kill this? Specially after SpeedRacer (also scripted by Silver) bombed so badly.
