List by Crow of the 2005 boards.

1. Insurance - These days it is VERY hard to get the USPS to pay out on any insurance claim over $50. Under $50 and they can make an in-office decision. If it is over, then the decision is out of the local PO's hands. In addition to this they almost never pay out on collectibles. They officially do NOT accept eBay printouts as proof of payment or value.

So my suggestion is if you buy something expensive and get it insured, ask for a receipt from the seller to be included with the item that says the price paid, date, etc. Also if the package comes smashed, keep it. They will want to see the package when you try to make an insurance claim.

Another note about insurance is DO NOT round the number off. Give the actual value. On the days I work the window I get tons of people when I ask if they want insurance go with $50 because that is the first price point before insurance goes up. Well guess what, if it gets damaged and they put in a claim and it was really worth say $35 they are not getting their money back. If it is worth $35 make sure you tell the clerk so.

2. Delivery Confirmation - It is a confirmation of delivery, but that is it. It is not proof of anything really and is not signed for. Anybody can accept that package. I put delivery confirmation on things I sell or trade just to make the buyer feel better, but after learning the rules about it, if it doesn't get there you really have no recourse.

3. Parcel Post - Parcel Post is the bane of anything fragile. You are much better off paying a little more and shipping something priority mail than parcel post. PP mail is treated like total crap. It is stuff in bags. The bags are thrown around. THey don't care whether the heavy stuff is on top or bottom. 95% of all smashed open packages I see are either Parcel Post or Media Mail (which is treated the same way and I will get to next).

4. Media Mail - They are cracking down on people sending stuff Media Mail that isn't really. We can now ask you to open a package if we think you may be mailing something Media Mail that isn't. If you refuse, we can refuse to mail the package. It is also treated as badly as Parcel Post. Actually usually worse, since Media Mail is often heavy books, they tear through boxes when thrown around.

5. Fragile stuff - If you have something that is fragile, please ask the clerk to stamp it as such. It DOES make a difference. Packages are literally thrown around when sorted. In fact they postal lingo for sorting packages is throwing or tossing parcels. The clerk will often stand near the container with the parcels in it throwing them into buggies that are assigned to each route. These buggies in my office can be anywhere from 2 to 15 or so feet from the clerk tossing the parcels. Fragile stuff (at least in my office) is taken out of the regular mail and carried by hand to the desk of the carrier who is to deliver it so it doesn't get smashed when tossed.

6. Registered mail - This really only applies if you are mailing something super valuable (in the thousands of dollars) because it is expensive to use but registered mail is the most safe and secure mail we have. It is signed for at every stop, kept separate in its own bags, which are locked and sealed, and people are actually held accountable if something happens to it. It also has built in insurance.

7. Dropping mail in boxes - First off, if you are mailing a package, do NOT just stick stamps on it and stick it in a mailbox. It WILL be mailed back to you due to new security measures. If you did it via meter mail that is fine, but actual stamps on packages must be handstamped by a clerk in the office. Packages over (I think) 14 ounces that have uncancelled stamps on them will be mailed back to the sender this is bad for another reason I will get to next. Also dropping big stuff in a mailbox is bad for 2 other reasons. The first one is if it is say priority mail and you stuck it in a mailbox, well mailboxes are for first class mail. If the clerk doesn't see it or doesn't bother to take it out, it gets sent to the first class sorting plant first and priority mail is done separate. This can cause delays in your mail. The second reason is it will just annoy the guy who empties the boxes.

8. Return to sender. Try to make sure you have enough postage on everything. If you get something sent back to you for lack of postage it can take a long long time. Remember that oddly shaped, oversized, and square envelopes require $.49 not $.37. The reason you don't want to get packages sent back to you return to sender is a lot of clerks are either too lazy or just don't know proper procedures for sending stuff back. This results in mail that is supposed to go back to the sender bouncing from post office to post office. Sometimes it will have actually been in the post office of where you originally sent it to multiple times before it gets sent back to you. I recently had a package at work that was return to sender. This was the end of the September. The parcel was originally mailed April 28.

9. Don't send cash or anything else valuable in an envelope where they can easily tell what it is! There are a lot of thieves working for the USPS, despite the large penalties for stealing from mail. This is especially a problem at the large plants where mail is sorted. I have seen many torn open empty jewelry boxes and empty check envelopes in the mail. Also you cannot insure cash sent in the mail. Some people actually don't know this so I figured I would mention it.

10. Express mail - If you send something overnight and it has a stated delivery time (usually the next day by noon or 3pm) and it doesn't get there on time, you can easily get your money back. Be sure to check online every time you send something express to make sure it got there on time. If it didn't, take all your receipts to the post office and get your money back. Even if it is 1 minute late you can get your money back. A LOT of express mail is late so it is good to always check.

11. International mail - Never ever ever ever leave the country off international mail. Even if it is to a well known city like London you are taking a huge risk by not putting England on there. The above mentioned parcel that took 5 months to get back to the sender was a package to Australia on which the sender didn't put the country. As far as I could tell it never even made it out of the US and it still took 5 months to get back to the original sender.

12. Tipping your letter carrier on Christmas is a good thing - While it is officially against postal policy for carriers to accept money not only do they do it, they expect it. I have seen countless conversations among carriers about how certain people don't give them their "whiteys" which is postal slang for Christmas tips. As a clerk I could care less about this since I work in the post office itself and I get nothing, despite sorting more mail in a day than many carriers combined, but the carriers do care. If you happen to have an evil bastard of a carrier, I wouldn't be surprised is your mail is often delayed or late because they don't like you.

13. If you have a problem, the Postmaster is your friend...sort of. A lot of times you can ask to see or on the phone speak to the Postmaster of your city directly. Though the larger the city, the less likely you can see him. But in my experience PMs don't like complaints and are usually pretty good about trying to deal with them. The main reason is they are judged on complaints to the postal line so they generally want them dealt with before it gets to that point. Supervisors on the other hand, at least in my office, just want you to go away and leave them alone as quickly as possible.

14. If you are sending something like a comic or artwork to a PO box make sure you have the clerk put "do not bend" on it! PO boxes are pretty small and large envelopes are folded in half to fit in them. If you mark something that can be creased "do not bend" then it will not be put in the box. Instead the customer will get a card telling them to pick up their mail at the window.

15. Dogs - Carriers know if you have a dog. They keep track of customers that do. They also generally do not believe you even if you tell them your dog is friendly. So if your mail hasn't come yet, and you have a yard with access to your mailbox, make sure your dog is not outside when the mail comes or you run the risk of the carrier not delivering your mail that day. Despite the whole in rain and sleet etc. stuff, carriers are within their rights to not deliver mail to a house if they deem it a threat to themselves and dogs fall into this category.

16. Priority Mail - The post office pushes priority mail and with good reason. It is where they make the most profit, but it is also the best deal. It is quicker and treated better than Parcel Post or Media mail and the supplies are 100% free. You can get priority tape, boxes, and labels for free at the post office (though we never have rolls of tape to give out at my office) and you can even order the stuff from the usps website for free. I am always surprised how few people seem to know this. The USPS really should play up the free materials thing I would think but they have never been good at advertising.

17. Boxes - As I said above, Priority Mail boxes are free. This is important to remember if you need a box. Our office has a Postal Store that sells boxes, tape, and other things. These are very high priced items. I tell customers who try to buy either all of the time that it is almost always cheaper to send something priority mail with a free box, than buy a box and send it parcel post. Not to mention you also get to use the priority tape for free and get a free label to use.

very insightful (and helpful), especially to us eBay sellers.

i have lost some very valuable things in the mail due to the Post Office's screw up's.

smashed and damaged freight and i couldn't do anything about it.

Pretty cool read. I never knew about "Whiteys" :) But I usually would leave a small box of cookies for the letter carrier on X-mas just because it's a nice thing to do (They have to deliver a lot to my house :D)

The insurance thing is almost dead on. I had to file a claim in January for a package sent to Canada (Only half made it there) I finally got them to pay up last month (I sent in Ebay, paypal, email print outs and all sorts of copies of USPS reciepts)

Good to know,...

I do have a question.

WHat to do if you live in a large building (multiple Mailboxes) and the letter carrier is constantly NOT sorting the Mail correctly, putting your mail in your neighbor's box.

Im asking because I was sent several DVDs, and only half the shipment came in, the rest has been missing for 2 weeks now. So Im suspecting that the Neighbors have it (and wont give it up)

I had this happen too, the postmaster told me to have things shipped to my work address. Hasn't happened since.

FedEx Express is the way to go. I understand the prices are higher, but 9.5 out of 10, the box is undamaged. If so - claims are so easy.

I work fedex part time now. And I gotta say its waaaayy better than UPS.

all packages get FREE insurance up to 100 bucks. Express Boxes/ envelopes are FREE.
The TAPE is even free.
The bubble wrap/paper filler is FREE
ALL packages have a tracking number. Even Ground.
Their is a time gaurantee as well.
Labels can be printed at home and packages tracked online or in store.

Same state shipping will get there the next day even if its the cheaper option.
They offer overnight, 2day shipping and 3day shipping.

I had that happen to me to. When I asked the postman he told me to ask the manger of the building to see the video tapes. Which I never knew their were any videos. Found out that the kids were going throught everyones mailboxes and taking DVDS and other stuff from everyone.

thats alot of info, all useful though. but i have to admit, i didnt read hardly any of it. i despise the mail system. especially after Katrina.
i have a ups account even for the little shipping i do. a little more expensive? oh yes. but easier. i can print labels at home and then drop the packages off at either the UPS store, or office depot.

You can print USPS labels at home and then leave the packages on your doorstep to be picked up. Saves you a trip.

USPS allows you to print postage and set up a carrier pick up. USPS also allows you to print what is known as a "Scan Form", confirming that your parcel was recovered by a mail carrier.

Don't get me wrong, not knocking UPS, but want to clarify that USPS offers the same convenience.

Has anyone mailed any of the Target Vehicles? I just sent (2) via Priority with the $0.65 Delivery Confirmation within the U.S. and got raped for $14.10! Is this normal these days? The box wasn't even that big, slightly bigger then the two boxed vehicles. I almost paid in shipping what it cost me to buy the vehicles. Last time i do that.

After a certain size, 12x12x12 I believe, the prices get ridiculous if they have to go very far. At least, for priority it is.

Yea, i believe i was just over those dimensions. And i mean JUST over and really got abused considering the value of whats in the box. At that point it almost becomes senseless.

I shipped 2 vehicles using USPS Priority Mail (AZ to NY) for $10.55 + Delivery Confirmation. USPS also provides FREE boxes for Priority Mail - ask for BOX #7 which is 12" x 12" x 8" and fits 2 vehicles perfectly. If you have a bigger box than that, you will have to pad more than needed and also makes it heavier. The 2 vehicles + box + light packing paper/bubble weigh just about 3 lbs total and depending on where you are sending from/to (zones) could cost from $5.05 (local) to $10.55 (zone 8). Saves a few bucks. I've always been one of the lowest shippers on eBay, maybe I'll share some more of my USPS "trick" here.

I usually use the free boxes, but had a plain box laying around that looked like it would work just fine. I will admit tho, it was about an inch and a half taller then i needed. *Laugh* I guess i should look for EXACT sized boxes now. It's common sense to pack everything as snug as you can in the smallest box, but i did for the most part which is funny, and here i am thinkin USPS gives the best deals.

Anyways, i have the receipt here...about 3 1/2 pounds in weight and shipped to (zone 8). I tossed in some Styrofoam peanuts and a tiny piece of bubble wrap.

Why is shipping to a P.O. Box risky? I read this in the B/S/T rules area, and I see that a lot of ebay sellers wont ship to PO boxes.

Again... why is this?

Thanks

From experience, I had a PO box and more than once a pick up note was dropped at the wrong box and the person went ahead and took the item even though it had my name. After dealing with the PO personnel, they even had the individual on video, but getting the item back was no luck.

I don't know if this was mentioned or not, but if you are shipping to Canada, they will assign a customs number which is printed on a bar code and stuck onto the package. I don't know if that number will be printed on your receipt or not, but it starts usually with an LCXXX... That number can actually be used to track the package online. Just thought I'd let you guys know. It's a nice little benefit you can give to the Canadians that you ship to. ;)

I use the customs numbers for my out of the country customers, and that statement should be clarified. You can use the number to check and see the date that the package was accepted at your local station, but most times it will not be trackable once it leaves the US.

I've actually got one customer in Canada right now who is missing a package, and tried using the customs number to find it with no luck on his end. He's emailing me every other day asking for me to do something, but my hands are tied since I don't have it. I'm considering making all foreign purchases ship via EMS from here on out, because this isn't the first time, and the losses are piling up.

Gotta say

"13. If you have a problem, the Postmaster is your friend...sort of. A lot of times you can ask to see or on the phone speak to the Postmaster of your city directly. Supervisors on the other hand, at least in my office, just want you to go away and leave them alone as quickly as possible."

Is.... situational. SOME of them care.

Mine.. .does not.

I live in the UP of MI...and our postal carrier sucks. And that's being nice.

1) He keeps my magazines and reads them. How do I know you ask? I routinely get them ruffled and fluffed and clearly paged though multiple times with fingerprints and smuggy prints in them. Food crumbs and the like. My wife's magazines? No. My Maxim and stuff? yes. He likes looking though my Wired too. I'll also be out and about and see stuff hit news stands and my mags won't show up for a week or two. Subscription mags hit your mailbox about a week before the same ones hit news stands. Not mine. Mine are always late and paged though.

2) The postal creed? They've never heard of it here. If it rains, the guy drives around in his car and only stops if there's a flag up at the box. I've seen him do it. I live on a street with 20 condos. The mailboxes are in 4 "groups" and I can see all from my window. I've seen him drive down the street and stop at the one box with the flag up. You can NOT tell me 19 houses full of family's didn't get ONE bit of mail in a day. Not one bill, one card, one bit of junkmail, one magazine, one package, nothing. There's got to be 60 -80 people living on my block.Sure some are kids but still. That just doesn't happen. If it snows? HA. We see him twice a week, MAYBE Three times. We also get notes in our boxes to the tune of 'Shovel out the STREET, 50 YARDS before your mailbox.

50 YARDS? That's half a foot ball field before the mailboxes. The street itself is probably only 200 yards long on this block.

3) The guy here doesn't care about your stuff. I've had expensive books (( $100 type stuff)) Delivered all the way across base, with addresses not even remotely close to mine. Only reason I got the items was I happened to know the people they were delivered to. Another time I saw the guy pull down the street. Stop at our group of boxes. Put letters and magazines in the box. have a package. Look at it, and toss it in the back seat. I was standing at the kitchen sink when I saw it. Bright green package. I was expecting one and thought that it must just be a different one.

Three days later the mail carrier gets out of his car and walks up to my door and tosses the exact same bright green package on my porch. He'd had it in his car, didn't feel like getting out so it was tossed in the back seat. 3 days later he finally delivered it.

Could someone else on the block perhaps have gotten a bright green package from Australia? One the same size and shape as mine. Same bright green packaging. Sure ... it COULD have happened. But I don't think so.

4) All these things have happened. I've called up and asked to speak to the post master. Got someone on the phone claiming to be him. Placed my complaints. told him about the shoddy delivery. The guy actually told me one time "Naa I don't belive you. Our guys wouldn't do that" When I'd seen the guy drive down the street and only stop at the one box with a flag. I insisted I saw it and the guy on the phone had the nerve to tell mme "Well some times you'll go 3 or 4 streets and noone gets a stick of mail" Gimmme a break. I've even been down to the post office to put in complaints in person. When I did the guy acted like he was giving me his liver, instead of taking the complaint, and I"m sure as soon as I walked out he tossed it in the trash. ((No proof of that. Just his attitude))

So.. while I'm sure there's 100s and 1000s of people working for USPS that are fine upstanding and wonderful people that have pride in their work and do good jobs....

Not all are... Our Post office Sucks bad.... I've complained, nothing's done. So we just live with it and if anything 'important' is coming, we try and get it sent UPS. I know USPS is cheaper, but with the absolute horrid service we get here, it's taking a chance with our items.

When I win things off ebay.. and they send stuff USPS... I just wince. I've got a Bench Press and Snow Serpent coming USPS now... and I'm sweating it.

if you've got a GOOD post office and GOOD postal carrier. Good deal. If you DON"T (( and I don't)) It's mail at your own risk at the very best. Vindictive punks paid by our tax dollars at worst.

A picture is a thousand words and a video proof can also be condemning. Your local news is your friend. If your mail carrier is neglecting his duties take some video footage. Everyone's got some sort of video device these days...camcorder, digital camera, heck even a cell phone perhaps. Take some hard evidence proof and present them to any of your local news station. If is "hot" enough or even if its a slow news day. Someone will be willing to run a story or investigate. News hound are always looking for a scandal. Like you said, its your tax dollars at work..you have the right to keep the PO honest.

Just my 2cents.

also, do the same carriers hit the same route everyday? How much "tip" is appropriate?

What happens / can you do if something sent Priority doesn't arrive in the 2-3 business days? I bought something off eBay, it shipped on the 6th (actually left the sorting facility), and it didn't arrive today (the 9th). I know it's not the seller's fault, but I thought Priority was guaranteed in 2-3 days? It's only coming from NJ, too. I've had Priority arrive from CA in 2 days before. I don't get it.

My post man is a childhood friend we grew uptogether and played joes a sa kid. he runs at the times i'm comming home. so i normally wait atthe front door and get my mail straght from him and we converse. he often sees the packages and askes me whats inside and i tell him what i have and what i traded for what.
so he himself is always careful with my mail. i with the others who touched the boxes did the same. here are a few pictures. documenting what i got in the mail yesterday. and my postman friend even said "you arn't going to like this one" as he handed it to me"

after viewing the box and its contents. takign it to the post office and showing them. ther respose

#1. you should of insured it.
#2. who ever packed it should of used more padding.
#3. there just toys.

i am fairly sure i could of simply ducktaped a box tothe side of a trusk and it would of arrived in better shape then the items i got. and people wonder why were cutting money going the post offices.

dunno if this on list but seriously loose parts or figures send in a bubbler mailer. A standard envelope may be ok for real small stuff that is not bulky but not for several good sized parts envelope can bust open and tear.

Hi,
I had a concern in mailing packages.
For instance, I send out a small accessory piece smaller than a dime and put it in a bubble mailer. The buyer paid and I charged him a cheap price. 3 buck shipped in total.
I go to the post office and the woman behind the counter puts it on the weigh scale. Charges me a flat rate of $4 and change.
I didn't make any profit, just short because of stupidity of the teller behind the glass. Make sure you don't get screwed next time and ask for the supervisor and make sure the lady understands perfect English. ;/

When selling on ebay, how do people come up with exact shipping prices?

also, how do I offer free shipping?

Here's tip it took me a while to find:
Even though you can't print first class postage on usps.com, you can through paypal here:
https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_ship-now
It is 31 cents less than regular first class and includes a tracking number.
I don't even know how to find it through paypal's menus, I just have the link bookmarked.

Is Registered Mail the BEST way to ship internationally so it can be tracked to appease eBay's Claims dept? I've had a rash of Brazil and France buyers and I can't take the chance they claim it never arrived. It's happened before and was quite COSTLY!! HELP!!

No

You should send it International Priority.

Comes with a tracking number (required by Paypal) and insurance.

Make the buyer pay for it.
