Hello fellow Hisstankers, thought I'd share a story with you. I brought my '98 Tacoma in on Friday for a "check engine" light. No big deal right? The service dept. calls me back two hours later to tell me that they are confiscating my truck and I can't have it back b/c it i unsafe for the road!!! The frame was rusted beyond repair. I thought the guy was pulling my leg!! I was ripping mad b/c this truck was my baby! I put a lot of extra work into it (custom rims, cobra insigna,etc..) Now I don't have it...

So here's the deal all Tacomas from 1995-2000 should be brought in for a free inspection of the frame for rust soft spots or holes. If they deem your vehicle unsafe they are buying it back, not confiscating it, for 150% of KBB excellent value no matter what condition! It's the real deal just do search on any engine and you will find it. When all is said and done I should get back close to $13,000 for a $8,000 truck and it saved any potential harm to me or my loved ones. So Toyota is taking good care of me. They have also given me a '09 Camry as loaner till the check comes and I buy a new vehicle.

So i just wanted to share this with you all incase you or family or friends have a Tacoma. Hope this helps someone like it helped me.

My Tacoma (or "Tacos" as they are called - www.customtacos.com :) )is an '07 and I have been VERY pleased with it. I had wanted one for years and was glad to finnaly get, knowing that it would take care of me and give me years of trouble free service as most Toyos do.

I used to work for a place that did fleet maintenance for a local surveying company that had a fleet of 4x4 Tacomas that were unmodified, maybe 25-30 of them. The would take them and drive them for a few years or so, putting around 200K or so on them of not only city and highway driving, but also a LOT of off road driving. Now this is in and all over South Florida too, so there is a lot of muck, sand, and even some swampy really deep, thick, wasit high, nasty black mud too. :( Every single one of those little Tacos would pull though like a champ, and then when they had finished up their service life with them and they were ready to swap them out for a new fleet, they would then let us go through them and replace anything broken, and THEN put them in cargo containers and ship them to South America for ANOTHER God knows how many more miles! :O

That was what sold me on them and got me to buy mine. I figure I can get a min of 15 years and 200k out of it, so I figure I'll be due for another truck around the time my boys get ready to go to college. :)

Here's what mine looks like -

Awesome!!! The slogan "Safety is free and accidents are costly" comes to mind. With gas prices rising, remember to make sure your next vehicle is also fuel efficient. Since they took good care of you, are you going to go with another Toyota? After something like that I'd probably would.

My truck was a 4 cyl. with only 85K miles. It was awesome on gas.
They are also offering incentives to purchase another Toyota..$1000 for a truck $500 for a car. I just went today and I think I am going to go with a Camry SE loaded , 4 cyl great on gas.
You could say they made me an offer I couldn't refuse!

How does a ten year old frame rust so much?

Maybe instead of putting on rims and a cobra logo you should have taken a look underneath.

Nice! LOL Just trying to help people doc.

Manufacturing error in applying the rust coating. The underneath was mint when I purchased it brand new ten years ago! Never had a issue with since until now.The truck was totally dependable. Nothing ever mentioned in all the scheduled visits to the dealer.

Thats craziness, I used to own a 01', and if anything the frame was the only thing that stayed mint on that thing..

The recall was only on '95 -'00's apparently they fixed the coating problem after that. Serioulsy it is just crazy. I planned on having my truck for a long time.
