Irony of ironies, isn't it?
Hardware company vs Software company.
God only knows how many hackers they've pissed off in the last couple of months. Sony should have know that conflict wasn't over.
Still, as much as I'm not of fan of Sony's - I feel bad for those effected. They shouldn't be punished for Sony's mistakes or perceived mistakes. Sadly though that's not the way the world works. I hope Sony is quick to inform those who were compromised, so they can protect themselves.

How long do you think that would last if you stopped paying the bill? Thats why i prefer PS3,free online play. I hate the idea of paying for a game(some people do it for years) just to play it.Thats why i don't play MMOs.

I have an XBox 360 and I don't pay a monthly fee and mine works just fine.
Do you buy DLCs for games you play? If so, then you're doing the same thing that people that play MMOs do.

Nope on the DLC front.I wait for the game of the year edition.This is why i don't like games with alot of online play for this reason.Out of all of my games,the only one i can't play is MAG.

It doesn't actually. People just keep pulling the "I pay for my playtime so I'm safe" card to kick the PSN users while they're down, even though it really makes no freaking difference.
The fact of the matter is, Sony screwed up and screwed up HARD, people's financial security has been compromised, faith in the brand has in all likelihood taken a HUGE hit, and so on. It would be the same way if this had happened to Steam or Xbox LIVE.

Exactly that. PSN is roughly a free version of Xbox LIVE, with for-sale DLC and games ranging from PSOne and 2 titles to "Original" games like Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
So if you hooked up to PSN, you'd have to give things like your address and credit card info and such for billing purposes, unless you were smart enough to buy pre-paid PSN cards.

I wouldn't be too sure. The outrage seems to come from evenly divide camps of the short-sighted who are too worried about not being about being able to play Portal 2 online, and those who are actually worried about fact that personal information was stolen and the possibility of identity theft.
I'm not saying the PS3 is crap because of this- albeit I will never praise the machine either, but that's just because I'm a SEGAtendoSoft person through and through- but this will seriously hurt Sony's credibility as a gaming service provider and might even affect their standing in this and the next console race.

This is why I never bought DC Universe. After one month you have to pay. I've been a console player for most of my life. I'm not use to the idea of the MMO model that I should pay to play a game I already bought. That sucks for those who have had their info exposed and/or stolen. I always stick with MS points or prepaid PSN cards to try to help myself to avoid situations like this.

well maybe nobody will give up there ps3 but it will certainly without a doubt stop some people from buying 1 in the future...of course not everybody but the scenario of someone going into a store and saying hmm which is better for online and the psn getting hacked and all the personal info getting out there from psn is gonna deter people from buying a ps3 without a doubt.
and thats where sony is gonna take a huge hit. and it might even slow down sales of future online heavy games.

If they fix the problem,people looking to get one say..a year from now.Sony will have fixed the problem and they shouldn't have to worry about it.I think the only games they would have a problem with is teh PaytoPlay type games,now i would be worried to play those.Just cause your info is sent everytime you log on.
From what i've seen on here and TFW,nobody seems to worried about it.The worst thing i've seen posted is "I'm changing my password" People just want to play their games,Thats all most people seem to care about.

PlayStation(R)Network
===================================
Valued PlayStation(R)Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011,
certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account
information was compromised in connection with an illegal and
unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this
intrusion, we have:
1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full
and complete investigation into what happened; and
3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our
network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you
with greater protection of your personal information.
We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill
as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and
efficiently as practicable.
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident,
we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following
information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country,
email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login,
and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data,
including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip),
and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may
have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your
dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have
been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit
card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have
provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity,
out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit
card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have
been obtained.
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email,
telephone and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive
information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email,
asking for your credit card number, social security number or other
personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information,
you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation
Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that
you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation
Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or
accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them as well.
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we
encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and
to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information
for those who wish to consider it:
- U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually
from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report,
visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.
- We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S.
credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit
bureaus
place a "fraud alert" on your file that alerts creditors to take additional
steps
to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can
make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however,
that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you,
it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your
identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others
are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a
fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report,
please contact any one of the agencies listed below:
Experian: 888-397-3742; www.experian.com; P.O. Box 9532, Allen, TX 75013
Equifax: 800-525-6285; www.equifax.com; P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241
TransUnion: 800-680-7289; www.transunion.com; Fraud Victim Assistance Division,
P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790
- You may wish to visit the website of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at
Deter. Detect. Defend. Avoid ID Theft (http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft) or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania
Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect
yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice
on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or
suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General,
and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be
contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone
(877) 566-7226; or NCDOJ (http://www.ncdoj.gov). For Maryland residents, the Attorney
General can be contacted at 200 St. Paul Place, 16th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202;
telephone: (888) 743-0023; or Maryland Attorney General - Home Page (http://www.oag.state.md.us).
We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this
incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the
clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes
information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that
additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information.
Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is
our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any
additional questions.

CC details were encypted and believed to be safe - Only 'personal details' were stolen, so that just means I'll get spam e-mail (which I get anyway).
Of course, we're now getting articles about "PSN users having hundreds of dollars stolen" in the usual 'Sony downer' manner - I've had my financial details stolen three times well before the PSN hack, but maybe I should automatically blame Sony because I may be able to sue them.
Once the network is back up (presumably more secure than ever) I'm be happy to stick with the company and continue to play online for free.
Fixed it for you.

But a billion dollar lawsuit could affect them as a business, which in turn will affect all of us PS users.. I am like many others.. I don't care.. I just want to play my games. LOL
For those of you that are aware of the site called 4chan.. there are rumors that a certain group amongst them are partially to blame.
I have a friend who hacks bank securities for a living, who has been hired by Sony to help track down the people involved. As well as help them beef up their security levels by including cryptic logs and a more secure firewall.

I want my PSN back up and running now! I read somewhere that it should be up within a week. But then I also read they are rebuilding the network from scratch with enhanced security and setting up the servers in a new location. So who knows when we'll be able to get back on.
Like most I have never used my cc on PSN. I pay enough for the games, I don't need to buy any extra stuff they're pushing.
PSN is supposed to be back up May 3rd, that was the word a week ago - now, they're saying it'll be the end of May before the whole network is running as it was before the attack.
Also, Sony recently confirmed that hackers only obtained 12,700 credit card numbers that were collected back in 2007. The numbers are said to belong to non-US residents.

End of may...shit!
The most used stuff should be back this week. End of May for a full system restoration.
Here quoted from GameInformer
The official Sony press release has been posted, saying that services like gaming, music, and video will all return this week. It makes reference to a "phased restoration" of services that will occur region by region, concluding with full service within the month. The initial phase of restorations will include the following:
* Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems
-This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
* Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
* Access to account management and password reset
* Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
* PlayStation®Home
* Friends List
* Chat Functionality
In addition, the following new security measures will be introduced to PSN:
* Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
* Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
* Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
* Implementation of additional firewalls
Addressing the attack, Kaz Hirai said “This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers, but our entire industry. These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber-security. We take the security of our consumers’ information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data. In addition, the organization has worked around the clock to bring these services back online, and are doing so only after we had verified increased levels of security across our networks."
A "Welcome Back" appreciation program will be implemented upon PSN's restoration, detailed below:
* Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
* All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
* Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.
The free content is yet to be revealed, but will likely include PSone classics or PSN titles.

I haven't purchased anything via the PSN, so I should be good credit card-wise. I have to wonder what other information Sony collects on people. I don't remember being asked for anything that someone couldn't look on Facebook to get.
On a plus note, I hear that there's an open Network Security position at Sony for anyone looking

Microsoft, alone, in the console market, with no competition...
You obviously DON'T find that terrifying. I do.
Ignoring Nintendo, eh? I see what you're going for. But you misunderstood me.
Sega is merely biding its time before it does to Sony what Sony did to them.

If the next Nintendo console is HD and less "family friendly" I might be interested.

I hope so, I would love to see a new kick ass Sega system released.

The pubic isn't ready for that.I still consider the Dreamcast to be one of the greastest gaming machines yet.N64 is a very close second.

Agreed.. Powerstone was awesome.. They shot themselves in the foot when they stopped production on all new games for the dreamcast to focus on the dreamcast 2 to try and beat PS.. and we see where that got them... now all they do are games.. in which I would love to see an updated version of Mutant League Football!

YES!!!! Mutant league football was the shit.I used the Acers.Kill all the refees and kill the other team until they had to quit.I didn't like Powerstone 2,they got away from what made it good.

The best system was the NEO-GEO you could take your memory card to the arcade and play your game of course you had to pay but for a home system to have the same ability as an arcade awsome

This!
Neo Geo just didn't have the right price point to really compete in the market at the time, and Samurai Showdown was the shit. My friends and I used to play that everyday after school.

I subscribed to DCUO but got rid of it last month because I don't have time to play it. Glad I did, they say they got into the PC accounts too.

Damn that sucks! I'm really glad I held off from buying that.
I want them to do something with DC like Marvels Ultimate Alliance.
Now that I will definitely buy.
