View Full Version : My post office experience today....
I have to vent about this, because it disgusts me. This thread is not about politics or who should be the next president. Its about my experience at the post office today and my internal struggle to deal with it.
So I go to mail off some GIJOE stuff and Im in line. The clerk behind the counter starts making small talk. I talked with him, then he starts mumbling under his breath about the "Black House". I was like, "Huh?"
Hes all, "Looks like they are going to have to paint the white house black, unless Mccain wins"
I was shocked. Not because of that BLATANTLY racist viewpoint, but because it was coming from a FEDRAL post office clerk while he was working. Calmly, I said, "I dont know, I think it would be good to have a minority president someday".
He says, "Not Obama, hes Muslim and a terrorist from Africa! He swore on the Koran! "
I said, "You must be talking about that email that went out saying all that garbage. Man, theres no truth to that. Where did you read that?
Him, "The internet"
Of course, I thought. I said to him, "Man, my Dad was from Iran and I'm not a terrorist. Just because hes from African descent doesnt make him a terrorist?"
I basically ended the conversation saying that once you are educated, you will stop thinking in terms of color. He turned to his coworker, and started speaking in another language so I couldnt understand him. I walked away.
At first, I left the post office thinking to myself 3 things..1.Wow, thats never happened to me before! 2. Should I say something to his supervisor...because that kind of talk is inappropriate for patron/clerk transactions and 3. There is still a HUGE racial divide in this country...whether people want to recognize it or not.
In the end, I couldnt stop from thinking about what happened and called the post office to speak to his supervisor. The post office supervisor was really understanding and said that they already had a file of complaints against him, Im not the first.
Anyways, there is no moral to this story. I dont want the guy fired. I guess I just hope that someday we as a country and can put aside color differences and just vote for the best candidate. I realize that hope is somewhat idealistic and will probably never be possible. Just the sad irony of life I guess. Sam

I feel you did the right thing by calling and talking to his supervisor. He is in customer service and thus that kind of talk should not be tolerated. What really grinds me about this story is that he starts to talk to you, the customer, about his own personal beliefs.
I only hope his supervisor takes note of all these complaints and actually deals with it accordingly.

That is such a damn shame. Unfortunately, nothing will be done. There's a file about a mile long against the Postal Carrier in my old neighborhood. She constantly cried "reverse discrimination" because she's African American. This guy is/will probably do the same thing.

you shouldn't have called his supervisor, you may have just gotten his coworkers rampaged.

Good point, but no one should have to live in fear of the "what if's" in life. This guy conducts himself in a manner not suitable for public consumption and it should be dealt with.
Since he works in a federal building does anyone know if they hang up a picture of the president? If so that would be great if Obama wins and he can look upon him for the next four (eight?) years!

of course not, Obama isn't goth. but I have a sneaking suspicion there may be a lot of Madden parties blowin' up in da house if he is elected. :D
Hey guys. Thanks for the input. I will probably avoid that post office in the future now though....mostly because Ive already though about what Gunslinger said (the employees being vindictive...not the madden parties) :)

Who does'nt recognize it? It will never go away. Dont kid yourself.
I've never had a post office employee talk about anything except mailing my package. Just give them an evil glare before they start talking and it works every time.

Na, don't give them the evil eye for no reason, these people probably work long and hard to be treated like that. Now if they start using racist or sexist remarks, then give them the evil eye TRW( :D

Since always? I've worked some customer service jobs (thankfully those are long in my past) and if I had ever voiced an opinion like that I would absolutely expect to be fired on the spot, with cause.
Sure, the Constitution protects every kind of speech, regardless of the repugnance of the opinions promoted. That doesn't mean employers have to.

so true. unfortunatly. But Honestly even though I know its there, I dont recognize it because race is not important to me as it shouldnt be important to anybody. Its when that divide pops up that I fight against it. I am slavic, whose people went through a racial genocide in Bosnia. I have friends who are Black. I have friends who are Jewish. ect ect ect. That guy disgusts me and hopefully the presidency wont be decided on Bigotry and Idiocy. Those things should stay in American Idol and not our Presidential Elections.

no its not that you can't have an opinion.
you just can't have a public opinion.
your supposed to do it 'the right way'
Fast Food - Spit/put stuff in thier order.
Grocery Store u bag thier items Littlest to biggest.
Mechanic - U rape them through charges and or do a crappy Job or Both!
Toy Store - you tell them 'theres nothing in the back even though U KNOW wave X/Exlcusive is on a pallet 4 feet behind the stock room door
Doctor - U tell them "no your fine" that odly colored lump is perfectly Normal.
Post Office- you smile and greet them then when they walk away you smash the SHIT out of thier package even though it says 'fragile' so that when it comes to the next person it sounds like a freaking jigsaw puzzle. (then you do the "oh ya! no insurance celebratory dance.)
Just a 'few' of the experiences you will have when you entrust service into other people :)
God Bless America where even assholes get to have freedom to express thier opinion.

unless he was asked his opinion, which he wasn't, his opinion has no place in Wyo's transaction.

Yeah, thats what Im afraid of. It will be interesting to hear how the packages I sent get delivered. Hopefully, okay.
On another note, I worked at a San Diego City job behind a counter for 10 years. I know what its like to do an endless customer service job like his. Small talk, bantering back and forth are all okay, but there are some subjects that are just off limits. Racist remarks DEFINITELY qualifies as one of them.

In today's day and age, that is truly sad. I'm not going to turn this into some political debate, but I find it truly disturbing that Obama will not have a fair presidential race now. It will be viewed as BLACK and WHITE by a many in this country. It won't be viewed as the best man for the job. It disgusts me.
And Wyo your experience with that Postal worker was just wrong. I would have called that fool out on the spot "Adam Sandler" style. Make that racist a'hole look like a complete jackass.

Ya know, I had a similar thing happen to me the other night at work. They have CNN on the breakroom tv and a female (mid 60's) co-worker said "I'd vote for any white person before I'd vote for a black person. I was just raised in a different generation. I tried for years not to be like my dad but the older I get, the more I realize that I AM my fathers daughter."
I understand that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, no matter how different they may be from my own... but that was just strait out racist! I, honestly, would rather have Obama in the White House over McCain. That would piss off alot of people in my family since they are staunch Republicans. I don't pick sides/ parties - I pick who I think is right for the position. Some of you may disagree with me, and that's fine. At least I'm not some 60-something year old screaming (more-or-less) "white power!". People like her piss me off.

Guys, I don't want any of you to think that I/we don't want you to speak your mind...but Swafus made an interesting point...this discussion can easily make a B-Line in to political country.
As such, I'm shutting it down. Please take note that it isn't because of anything that anyone has said or done. Better to be safe than sorry. :)
The best person for the job is the best person for the job, regardless of color or sex for that matter. That goes both ways. I don't vote for or against someone because they are black or a female.
I do not like Obama, but that has to do with his political views not his color. That said, I do not care for McCain and that has nothing to do with his age.
As for the postal employee, that is just inappropriate to comment in that fashion while working. He is free to wear a white hood after or before work, but he really needs to keep his comments to himself while working. He represents the US Government while "on the clock" and the government does have a right to limit his speech and expression during that time.
