View Full Version : 1987 Movie Question

Is the opening supposed to be in the continuity of the film?
Meaning...what Serpentor is ranting and raving about is the recent COBRA failure to destroy the Statue of Liberty?
Or is the opening just a stand-alone sequence that isn't technically part of the story?
I never thought of the openings for any of the Joe seasons as existing in the timeline before.
What do you think?

stand alone sequence
writer of the movie had nothing to do with the opening sequence (in fact, he always disliked it)
As for me, I can watch that opening sequence over and over again and still get goosebumps...it's that awesome!

I think its just a stand alone sequence but this is a great point.Never really thought about it.

He was just in a pissed mood. Remember he has DNA of all these bad-asses and he wonders why him and his army look back. Of course in my opinion it was Cobra Commander's army originally before the Coup d' Etat with Serpentor leading the charge.

Stand alone sequence and the best piece of american animation ever created.

I've always viewed it as a stand alone sequence that shows off the Joes prowess in always defeating Cobra "over land, and sea, and air" it was more just a way to explain the roles of the Joes and Cobra.

It is a stand alone for sure. They mention it in the Blu-ray commentary. In fact it was created during the middle of production if I remember correctly.

Well, regardless of of what everyone involved in it's creation says, i say "hell yeah!" Why not. The Joes just kicked Cobra's ass and blew up a crap load of vehicles all televised for the world to see. they were even smiling while they did it. So it's a perfect reason for Serpentor to decide it's his time to take over... maybe the Cobra la folks were watching it all on TV and that's why they made their move too. Cobra Commander decided to go all Captain Kirk and strapped on a bomb and a jetpack and dove right into the battle... then looked like an ass getting punched by Duke and flying away ON TOP of a trouble bubble. Globulus just had enough and it was time to make some changes!

I just want to know what was the point of capturing Liberty Island? Serpentor is a moron with a hard on for US monuments.

the plan doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. Land a whole bunch of troops on Liberty Island, and then blow it up with all of them still on the island?

The opening sequence was just that, an opening sequence. Serpentor was just displeased with Cobra Commander. Probably because whenever CC was involved with anything it always ended with a "Cobra! Retreat!".
Now... not hijacking or trying to change topics but, I love the renegades rendition of Commander and kind of wish CC was portrayed that way in the 80's toon. Then again, I was never a big Serpentor fan and was happy when he caught an arrow in the comic books. I know I know, different writers, no continuity, etc between the comics and cartoon.. just my .25 worth of ramblings.

^^^Every word of this^^^
I've always regarded the sequence as relating to Serpentor's raging rant at the beginning of the movie.
Regardless of what the folks who drew up the sequence and the script-writer/story architect (who were never on the same page to begin with) say about it, it makes sense that the opening sequence ties in with the opening scene. And regardless of what those two parties say, I would think the guys editing the movie together might have a different opinion, and may have known what the braintrust that was behind designing the storyline had in mind. Maybe they told the guys who designed the sequence that they wanted a big action-packed opening because the lead-in of the movie needed to show Cobra messing things up and losing again because of CC.

Stand alone.
I never liked the intro.
I always loved the intro. Occassionally I will watch it on youtube. I also think that it was a stand alone sequence apart from the movie. I think the intro is a kind of summary for GI Joe as a whole.
I always loved that CG parachuting down and punching the camera for some reason lol.
One thing that bothered me about this was Cobra Commander flying the bomb in. Wouldn't CC be the absolute LAST troop to perform this task? When you are in charge, shouldn't you send in a minion to do that sort of task lol? I guess it made it more dramatic though.

Haha I was exactly the same way. I used to be so upset when there would be this amazing animation and then the show would start and it looked horrible and half-assed.
I always assumed that the Statue of Liberty battle served two points-1 was to give an amazing intro and 2-was to be the battle that just happened that Serpentor is pissed about.
I remember reading something where they stated that the Statue of Liberty battle was at one time the climax of one of the scripts or had been considered but was later dropped when the new movie script came into play.

Well, they were supposed to be terrorists. Makes about as much sense as most terrorism plots involving explosions.
I'd say Cobra Commander personally planting the bomb was a stunt to get back in the spotlight of Cobra. Serpentor was becoming more and more important, so CC could potentially brag: "I was the one who persssssonally planted that bomb, you floating chair-riding nincompoop!"
Oh, and as a kid I watching the movie, I thought the intro WAS in continuity. At first watch, I thought it was just a intro (like the ones in the cartoons), but when Serpentor ranted I suddenly thought: "oh, cool! That intro was part of the story!!"
the best piece of american animation ever created.

I always thought it was part of the movie continuity since Serpentor is fussing on how incompetent CC is. I took it to mean that CC had jacked up the Statue of Liberty attack.
Serpentor starts around the 4:30 mark.

I would have never thought that it wasn't meant like that.
