View Full Version : So I challenged store manager for wave 7 and 8

So I was at target because I learned that this particular store had approximately 90 pieces on hand. Yup, you herd it right, approximately 90 pieces on hand.

Upon arrival, there were about 12 figures on the peg and i'm like something is wrong here. They had all but the Hiss Driver and Cobra Vipers.

So I approached an associate and asked if they can help me. I ask if they can pull out more figures from the back because according to the store records, it shows this location had about 90 figures "On Hand."

I also told the store associates that I was looking for the Cobra Vipers and the Hiss Drivers as well as the ones already on the pegs.

The store associate replied and said "Sorry Sir, but we can not pull out more from the back until the pegs are low." "And that we want it to be fair for other customers to get a chance at getting the figures as well." The associate further stated that "There are notification that says can not pull more figures from the back."

At this point, I was disappointed and completely disagree with this particular Target store's policy. And so I requested to speak with the store manager on duty.

So the store manager arrived and I introduced myself and shook her hands firmly, like I mean business ya know!!

I informed her that I strongly and completely disagree with her store policy regarding action figures. And that if anything, the policy does more damages than good. So I began to explain to her my reasons.

For one, there were no signs or notifications regarding limits or "Store associates can not pull out more stocks from the back room."

Secondly, the store policy is not nationwide and its something this particular store came up with.

Third, its not fair for those customers who makes the effort to arrive at the crack of dawn to compete against other customers.

Last, I feel that it should be a "First come first serve basis." And I further told the Manager that if you want something, you have to make the effort to get it because things don't just come to you. You have to earn it.

I also told her that the last Target I went to had no problem pulling out more figures from the back room. In addition, that is how quality customer services is all about. To go above and beyond the expectations of valued customers.

The store manager re-evaluated the situation and decided to bring more figures from the back. In fact, they had two toy associates hauled out about nine cases of wave 7 and one case of wave 8.

FYI: there were other retailers that I got my figures from besides Target.

Nor do I care what one does with thier money
I really hope you plan to open all of them.

I hope you NEVER see another carded figure on the pegs again :)

Oh man, if I did that (I wouldn't but theoretically, let's say I did!) and my girlfriend found out she'd make me take most of them back and she'd probably question my sanity! :) I remember finding a whole wave of Joes and Star Wars out shopping with her one time at Target and she kind of freaked out. Funny thing is if I buy 10 figures it's the same amount as she'll spend on a dress or a blouse (I know, I know, they're toys). Women! Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em!

Like driving around town, calling in to have them saved, or being there early in the morning or during stock times at like 1-2 AM.

If only kid(s) has as much interest as we do in the 25th Joe line, I would be glad to hand him/her a few vipers instead of the "Scalpers."

But since the 25th debuted around Nov '07, I have only seen one kid expressed interest in them. My last encounter was one kid picked up a S/E and set it back and picked up the Iron man figure instead.

You are correct. The goggles are not 100% sealed tight. But what can we expect from a $6.48 figure.

Its not like I have the need to turned them upside down and shake it until the goggles comes off either.

Yeah why arent kids...into these......

Looking back when we were kids, the cartoons and comics reinforced our influences and immediately draws our attention to them when we see them at toy stores.

Until kids see them on cartoons or comics and such, will we start to see kids picking up the 25th Joes.

Of course we also have parents who already introduce them to their kids.

DarthBrett
05-25-2008, 06:07 PM
Yeah. Kids watch TV and that was the way Hasbro got to us by airing a cartoon to basically advertise and promote the toy line (the comic book also obviously helped the toys as well). There are no cartoons or TV commercials for the new GI Joe line right now so kids wouldn't really know about it unless they see it walking down the toy aisle with mom or dad or a parent or guardian introduces them to the line.

Betamax......All of my movies as a little kid were on Beta (my aunt would tape movies from cable). We had a Betamax when I was growing up (superior picture quality to VHS, but never caught on and tapes couldn't fit as much on them). I don't think my family got a VHS deck until 1989. Ironically though, we got a laserdisc player the same year so as I got older all of my movies were VHS copies of laser discs (much better since most LD's had the WS versions). I started buying DVDs in March of '97 when they first came out.

he got them from dif places.

now if he had went to target and got them in 1 swoop like a limited exclusive. say PDD...... at comic con 'because his friends worked there'

then we could Lynch him.

all of us will be able to score our amounts sooner or later

at least he has also stated he is going to open them.

so i would say it is a PLUS.

the more we buy the more they make the more they sell.....

Agent, getting back to your original post- can you say in more detail how did you know exactly how many figures they had. I'm assuming something with the DHCPs and calling from another store.... Did you know they would have Wave 8 and how many? I know they can print a inventory check from one store to another, did you bring that with them and show 'em?

Originally, I intended to stop by one Target and there were 2 S/E, Duke, and Spirit from wave 7. I asked if there was anymore of the Vipers and Hiss. So the associate checked that gun-like scanner and they were the only ones left.

Then, the associate said I can find out if there are other Targets that carry more figures on hand. So I said sure and I note down about 5 other Targets and how many are on-hand. So my journey began...

Nice score, good work GHQ. Although it makes me think, the Viper can't be as unpopular as people are making it out to be (awkward hands, flimsy goggles) if one collector can buy 68 of them in a single day or even over the course of a week. But then again there's rarely been an unpopular troop builder in the entire 25th Anniversary/Modern Era line of G.I. Joe figures.
Again congrats on your haul you lucky SOB. :)

While BMW and Audi are all nice exotic cars, I think I have out grown the car phase. I'm more into buying my first mortgage and with all this 25th Joes constantly coming out is quite a challenge for me to save up for a good size down payment for a home.

Oh yeah! The PP Cobra Vipers. I may have to challenge the store managers for that too. One day and im sure the manager already know what to expect from a paying valued customer.

Part of me gets pissed cause it's this kind of stuff that will ensure I'll never find a Viper in the store. But deep down I know someday you'll look upon all those Vipers and think "dam why the fu$k did I buy all these", and that makes me smirk.

Seriously though, if I was the manager I would have been pissed for you tryin to tell me how to run my store. I'd be the crazy card bending manager.

By all the powers of hell and darkness, whoah...

I agree with your philosophy about first come, first served, etc., and that you have to put in the extra work if you're going to get what you want.

That being said, I am very grateful you don't live anywhere near me!!! Our stores generally get one case at a time every month. I found three cases of Wave 7 at Wal-Mart one time and that seemed like Christmas morning. That's the most I've ever seen put out at one time.

Of course, if there are other local Joe collectors here in the Gump, I probably drive them crazy, too. I generally have really good toy karma and find stuff when it is new. I wiped out Wave 8 (they only had one case, though, and I wanted a MOMC sample of each of them) at one Wal-Mart, got the PP Officer, Major Bludd, Roadblock and Baroness at another Wal-Mart (wanted them for displays) and I'm still looking for 3 more PP Officers and (How did I ever--!?) SIX Major Bludds for different displays. I know what I want and I get it when I find it. I bought every COBRA Trooper here I found for months until I ended up with fifty-ish of them. I never thought the day would come when I'd leave a blue COBRA Trooper on the pegs.

I only wanted 2 of the new Vipers, though. I overloaded on TRU Viper Pits (eight sets) when those were out. I don't mind mixing ARAH and 25th/Modern style either.

I will probably get every BAT I see, though. And at least ten Snow Serpents if not more, so bring 'em on!

No offense man, but I can't say that story exactly impressed me. I can understand asking about the figures and whatnot, but to "demand" them be brought out just so you can buy almost every single one, isnt that just gonna enforce the rules that you feel are "offending" you? Doing that kinda shit just makes the hunting that much harder on the rest of us, and makes us all look like pricks to the store management. Scalper or collector, hell, after reading this, I can see why stores would look at us as being one the same.

Im starting a business, I cant afford to go out and blow all my money on these things, but I tend to spend much more than I should. If Im near a wal-mart or target, Ill stop in just to see if there is anything there, if not, then Ill merrily go on my way.

Hearing this kind of stuff just makes me feel I'm in over my head even looking, and almost makes me want to quit looking and collecting these altogether.

zomG u so know if that was 68 B.A.T.S ... people here would be creaming their BVD's

lets do the math boys and girls

Sixty eight divided by two. = 34.

so lets say... he ALREADY HAD 8 VIPERS. (he got them from WM) earlier in the day or a different day... you know '4 cases' (2 per case) Just by chance...

Then his 'area' happened to get lucky. He is at Target and asked them to run an LRT check. (I forgot what LRT stands for Damn it I used to work there and I forgot UGH!)

he finds out from either an employee or guest service that store A.) has '10' cases. store B.) has '10' cases. and store C.) has 10 cases
Whether Wal Mart or Target or whom ever.

So he spends a little time driving the 3-4 miles to each store Coz Damn it those things are everywhere!

I don't call that being a Prick, or a scalper/Hoarder.

I think that Panthro called it 'Ingenuity"

Lets go to the dictionary and find it now shall we?

Ok here we go!

ingenuity
One entry found.

Ingenuity

1obsolete : candor, ingenuousness2 a: skill or cleverness in devising or combining : inventiveness b: cleverness or aptness of design or contrivance3: an ingenious device or contrivance

Ok now onto the next word. "Inventiveness"

inventiveness

One entry found.

Inventive

1 : adept or prolific at producing inventions : creative <an inventive mind> 2 : characterized by invention <an inventive method>
— in·ven·tive·ly adverb
— in·ven·tive·ness noun

Final word "Creative"

Main Entry:

1cre·a·tive

1: marked by the ability or power to create : given to creating <the creative impulse>2: having the quality of something created rather than imitated : imaginative <the creative arts>3: managed so as to get around legal or conventional limits <creative financing>; also : deceptively arranged so as to conceal or defraud <creative accounting>

The Definition I would be look for is #3 " managed so as to get around legal or conventional limits"

I don't see as anything he did being illegal. Last time I check no bills had passed the house. Stating it is a "crime" to buy action figures or support your local retailer. If anything he is helping his community I hear target gives back 2% to the local area from each store.

Hes Just an Average man with a plan doing his thing! However he went ahead and was first come and "First Served"

If that had been 68 Buzzers this guy would be labled as a Gaw- Daym HERO so it was 68 Vipers?

are they 1 per case? NO, Are they Limited No!

Did he walk into Target whip out his ..... snatch the manager by the hair and start jabbing him in the eye with it? (Gawd I HOPE NOT!) I am sure judging from his pictures and his previous posts it went down like this..

Mr.GHQ walked into the retail establishment, presented his case politely but firmly to said employee/manager made his request then explained how it helps you to S-E-L-L S-T-U-F-F. The light bulb in the manager's head went off. Like "ZOMG U mean if I put the toys on the floor people will come in and buy them" AND It will increase my sales?! Holy Crap! Whod'a THUNK IT?

Mr. GHQ then said "well do you think it would be possible to help me out?? I would really appreciate it" I will buy an above average dollar value and it will increase your UPT. *Units per transaction* always a good thing!

The manager went ahead and pulled them from the back maybe they even flexed them into the shelf space with some of those empty clearance end caps that are always half full of random garbage

So if each case had 2 vipers and he did this at 3 stores...

20+20+20+ = 60. For Every 4 vipers he saved $5

so not only did he pull off a fat haul he paid 5.99 each (approximatley)

either way Target sells out of product because u know these joes are hot. Kids will more than likley be MUCH HAPPIER with a 'snake eyes" or spirit.. hell even duke with a FLAG Vs. Cobra commander with a vest pssssh

So for the record. he is helping Target which helps the E-C-O-N-O-M-Y

Target sells more, More stores get built. everyone wins when you buy tons of mass produced Gee-eye-joes!

Now everyone lets do a big group hug :D

Access being a nice customer service rep. I've called a Target store before (Also did this in person a few times) and when you give the CSR the DPCI number they can check on what they have in stock, BUT they can also check on what other stores in the area has in stock and how many units they have. All it takes is a little asking

The price scanners they have throughout the store also tell you if there's anything in the stockroom or not.

Why should he? He did the work to get 'em, and he got 'em. I don't see where he should feel any shame. And he didn't buy every figure, just the army builders. Sounds like he left a ton of wave 7-8 for others to enjoy. And while I'm sure others will be dissapointed in no Vipers, at least they'll get some of what they're looking for. You can't have everything you want (with the exception of Agent, apparantly :)), that's part of what's wrong about people these days - they want everything, and they want it now, and if they can't get it, someone else is to blame, rather than themselves for not getting up and going out and getting it themselves.

Dude's already said he's gonna open 'em all. Even if he wasn't... well now, that's his decision isn't it? What if he puts them all in a box in storage? Is that wrong? What if he opens 58 and sells 10 on eBay? Is that wrong? What if he sells half on ebay and half at cost to us here? Is that wrong? What if he sells ALL on eBay and donates the money to Toys for Tots? Is that wrong? What if he sells em all on eBay and donates half the money, and spends the other half buying more Joes, helping ensure the line continues? Is that wrong?

Point is, its not up to you to declare whether or not what he did was necessary, or right or wrong. As long as he didn't steal 'em, or cheat to get 'em, he can do whatever the heck he wants with them. They're his, bought and paid for fairly.

every target store i have been in enforces the rule of not getting certain items from the backroom until the quantity is low. usually those restrictions are imposed on collectors items from the toy department or very limited quantity items like gaming stations....and they do that for the exact reason of not allowing one single person to purchase all of the merchandise in one fell swoop. just thought i'd share.

I'd be the crazy card bending manager.

oh and whoever that girl is in the pic is way cute

If I were the manager I'd have told you to bug off for trying to tell me how to run my store.

Generally speaking, we buy because we like it. I buy such quantities because I LOVE them. You'll probably smirk even more 10-20 years from now that I still have some in MOC and some in display using diorama project during my retirement years.

You honestly feel that I was telling the Manager how to run their store? At no time was I being rude to the Manager and to their store associates. In fact, I was giving them suggestions on how they can improve their sales a bit or two on our beloved 25th Joe line. In addition, that their Target will out shine other Targets and retailers near by.

Even though I don't have hard numbers and statistics and sales records in front of me, I was able to persuade the Manager's decisions to extend the pegs of currently 6.

A little public relations does not mean i'm telling them how to do or run their business and job.

And if you feel those Ladies were way cute, I wish you were there with me in person. They would have put smiles and butterflies in your stomach to last a week or so.

I agree with your philosophy about first come, first served, etc., and that you have to put in the extra work if you're going to get what you want.

That being said, I am very grateful you don't live anywhere near me!!!

Of course, if there are other local Joe collectors here in the Gump, I probably drive them crazy, too.

I will probably get every BAT I see, though. And at least ten Snow Serpents if not more, so bring 'em on!

One Walmart had a stand by itself of wave 7. They had approximately 40 S.E. and 2 W.B. So believe me, I feel your pain too.

If you feel that i'm part of the problem, think again. You have even bigger problem. I call that competition. We are ALL competing with each other one way or another.

Glad you agree with me on the philosophy on "First come, first serve."

Ahhhh....I remember the good 'ol days in the eighties when you could just walk into a store and find every Gi Joe/Transformer/Star Wars/Thundercats/etc figure you wanted or needed and didn't have to worry about one person clearing out the entire stock of one particular character. If the store didn't have that one particular character you were looking for, you could just return to the same store another day with the hopes of finding it that time; unlike today due to the hoarders buying up all the "good" characters. I also remember the days when you were just grateful of having that 'ONE' special character that was your favorite from the TV show or comics. Now look at today's collector, and society in general: greedy, hoarding, selfish, unapologetic, and boastful. Isn't American society great? </sarcasm>. I also remember the days when we as kids didn't bug/annoy the store employees to pull out their entire stock with some sort of 5th grade "logic and reasoning" on why they should fulfill our innate greed and lust to hoard every figure of one character and ruin it for everyone else.

As a collector who only collects one of each figure that interests me, you seriously make me sick and piss me off with the fact that it's people like you that prevent me to casually walk into stores like the old days and buy that one hard-to-find figure that I searched so hard for. BTW: No wonder why you have been single since 2003. Most women I know wouldn't tolerate a guy putting all that money and time being spent before them. Enjoy the single life, bro; because it looks like you will be a lonely man for a long time coming.

All I am saying, is if I see you buying up all the Snow Serpents in fell swoop (as he is my favorite cobra character) and I am there since I live in San Diego too, I am totally going to tackle you and take one of them. Being 6'2" and 220 pounds of muscle I am not too worried that I can't grab at least one from you :D.

I don't feel that I was in the wrong at all. Retailers are in the business to sale. Anything that can help and push their sales among other retailers is a plus. Thus keeps them in business. I'm surely you can agree that the amount I purchased and many, many other Joes collectors help keeps the retailers in business. Thus, continues to see more 25th Joes on the pegs.

If I recall correctly when these first came out last year, retailers were skeptical on the sales of the 25th line. Look at where its going now. Its selling like hot cakes and retailers and Hasbro are having a hell of a time keeping up with the demand.

Are you now impressed with the way OUR love for 25th line are selling? Of course, my 1st post was not intended to impress anyone or to show cocky-ness or to show off and brag to any of US here. If anything, it would help encourage US to speak up to the store Managers in the hope they would expand their pegs and to keep the pegs filled. Thus, put pressure on Hasbro to produce more pieces.

I hope one day when you open your business that you would see the demand trend and getting those demands met.

Welcome to the world of economics my friend. And yes, competition does exist in our economy.

fyi, your nuts if you think i'll ever post pictures of such a glorious haul just to be insulted or harassed for being lucky. honestly, the attitude here on this forum is just going to drive people away from sharing their experiences if everytime people jump on them for doing what they have every free right to do. if i found 20, damn sure i'm going to buy as much as my budget allows. for myself and others i help out.

I'm talking about the girl in the flirt t-shirt, not your pic. Your pic is too small to see anything. But seriously, I'm just saying that the manager probably has a lot more important stuff to worry about than GI Joes. The amount of profit Target makes off GI Joes is probably miniscule compared to their entire bottom line. The manager just wanted you off her back.

Yes...but there is a thing such as common courtesy towards other collector's who only want just one figure like myself that this guy is seeming to neglect; which goes for all other troop builders/hoarders, as well. In my eyes, troop hoarders are no different than scalpers, except they don't sell to try and make a profit. Or do they?

Besides, comparing Gi Joe figure hoarding to HIV/AIDS, Children starving, kicking puppies, etc. is very much a weak analogy, thereby making your argument a fallacy. You cannot compare a plastic luxury such as Gi Joe figure collecting to things that take people/animal lives away.

I told her, "Why yes I do." I also told her that I play with them too and that these are so kool and that I used to play with them back in the 80s. Then she asked what do they do? However, by including pictures with your original post you thereby threw out all credibility of not trying to brag or impress anyone; which I am not impressed, btw. I just feel sorry for you because you obviously have way too much money to be spending on luxuries, such as 50 of the same figure.

Also, by the tone of your writing about what you had done with the Target management, wouldn't you say that that was a bit of cocky-ness on your part by how you went in great detail recounting your story, word for word? I am just saying!!!

And anyway, he bought toys. It's not like he took all of the food at the local soup kitchen, leaving the hobos to starve. Grow up and join the rest of the adult collectors.

Wow awesome find i think by doing that you help to move them of the shelves and they will keep ordering more to sell. it beats what the store would and and sell there overstock to places like biglots how did you find out the store hand over 90?

but this qoute reminded me of something a friend told me about the other day. He went to walmart and saw Destro and a Viper and he had them in hand ready to go to the casher. This little kid came to get a Joe from the self. He was wanting the destro. The kid didn't whine to him but he was disappointed went back to his mom. My friend over heard what was said. The mom said: "why didn't you get the figure with the silver head you where wanting". The kid said:" because that man had it and he was the only one the he was wanting". My friend then walk over to the kid and his mom and said "hear ya go" and handed them Destro. He walk away with the viper.

I also seen kids starting to come by and grad them off the selves too which make me happy

A better example would be if he were to purchase all the Sony Playstation 3's to prevent other from buying it; which also happened, but mostly by scalpers looking to make a profit on the Playstation 2's success.

No one has any right to do so, and people are vilifying him as if he does the things that I said he did in my initial, sarcastic portion of my post. We're on a GI Joe collecting website, and that is what he is doing. That alone is enough for me to cheer him and congratulate him on the purchases he has made. There have been 7 Troopers sitting at a local Wal-mart for 13 days now (Possibly more, I've only been keeping track for 13 days) The Viper is double packed in wave 7 and also packed in wave 8 that's about the same amount the Trooper has been packed. You will all see many Vipers, but patience is key

wolfrunner74, we're making those analogies because that's what it seems like people are doing. In case it didn't come off well, I was heavily dripping with sarcasm in my initial post, because god forbid someone buy something. As I said before, we're in a capitalist nation, not communist. He can buy whatever he wants, as long as he's buying it, and not stealing it. Who are you, and who is anyone to judge what he buys, with his own money, that he earned? No one has any right to do so, and people are vilifying him as if he does the things that I said he did in my initial, sarcastic portion of my post. We're on a GI Joe collecting website, and that is what he is doing. That alone is enough for me to cheer him and congratulate him on the purchases he has made. There is no victim here, stop trying to find one.

Meh...when I see a guy like him with 50+ of one figure and here I am searching and searching for just one, you better believe that's going to piss me off. Granted, you do make some good points but when it affects my collecting ability, then I gotta speak up for those that just are NOT into troop building/hoarding like this guy is or any other guy/girl is in too and just only wants ONE to add to his/her collection.

On a side note: I do have a Viper figure....FINALLY, but it was only because I got it from my brother who lives in a very, very small college town with a Walmart in it. So far, it seems like he is the only collector in that town; who also only collects one of what interests him despite having the opportunity to being a hoarder. However, he doesn't want to deprive other collectors or children that live in this small town from their favorite Gi Joe figures unlike what this GHQ-Agent is doing.

It's cool that you called the Target manager out and got what you wanted, but the Viper is not that great a figure. I have 2 and that is one too many IMO. They are actually becoming peg warmers around here. I guess collectors are starting to realize how bad this figure is...

zomG u so know if that was 68 B.A.T.S ... people here would be creaming their BVD's

lets do the math boys and girls

Amberbratt,

I couldn't have said it better myself. This is a well thought reply and I THANK YOU so much for your time and effort!

Valid point (and I didn't have time to read 14 pages, searching for his intentions with the figures), but how many times have you walked into a Target, Walmart, or wherever else to find a few Serpentors, Scarlets, and a bent up Cobra Commander hanging on the pegs? What if you were the next collector to walk in the store and pass this guy with a shopping cart full of all the new stuff? Are gonna think "Well, it sure is good he got everything he wanted and then some," or are you gonna be a little more than frustrated that your search was in vain?

I'm not demonizing the guy. It's really cool that he found them. I have the right to bitch though, and if it were me walking in on a motherload of new items, I wouldn't buy out the supply.

Being that we're talking about a California resident and I'm from Indiana, this is the point where I shut my mouth. He didn't slight me in anyway, and I don't wish him any ill will. I'm sure you can understand my point, though.

With that logic then, why couldn't he just buy maybe one or two Viper figures now, and then once they have "flooded" the market and the demand for them died down, then do his troop building? Why did he have to rob everyone else from obtaining a new and hot figure after it was released instead of waiting until they were mass released?

So he should postpone buying what he wants until everyone else has had a chance to buy all that they want? If that's the case then the next time you go grocery shopping you better not buy the last gallon of milk because it's not fair to the stranger that might or might not be on his way to the same store to buy a gallon of milk!
