View Full Version : Poll: Do you like Renegades?

A simple yes or no to the poll, or a 4-page presentation with annotated screen captures, logical proofs, and quotes from episode scripts and writer/artist/actor interviews -- either will be equally appreciated.

i like the cartoon but as far as toys getting made, no way. the artists of renegades have about as much drawing skill as i did in middle school, i can draw circles around these artists. i just think it would be horrid to have shitty toys produced resembling renegades.

I hate the artwork of GI Joe Renegades. In particular the pants and in some cases the character designs themselves. The figures however are really cool especially that Cobra Commander. As for the show the repetitive nature has lead to three episodes being on my DVR and me having no intent to watch them. They lost me on the Baroness attack on the train. I still have watched up until three weeks ago so I'll watch them today.

I did until they killed it. I really enjoyed the details that went into every aspect of the show. It was by far the best representation of Joe that we have ever gotten. It was something new that was for children and adults. It had plenty of arah roots but was fresh and had it's own thing. A real shame that it was axed for roc2.

My 5 and 6 year old girls love it! I think they've done an excellent job, reinventing Joe by starting everyone young.

My entire family enjoys it. Including my girlfriend. If a show can entertain a 3 year old, an 8 year old, a 29 year old woman, and a 36 year old man, I think it's onto something.

Not that any of this will change anything, but for what it's worth we own RoC on DVD, but it never gets watched now that Renegades has come on. My girlfriend thought RoC was silly, I thought it was poorly handled creatively, my 8 year old enjoyed it on the big screen, but grew more and more critical of it with each viewing until now he can't stand it. My 3 year old has no interest in it what so ever.

As far as grabbing a future generation, our 3 year old is now the biggest Joe fan in the house. He has many Combat Heroes I picked up from discount retailers which he refers to as "his Joes". He LOVES Renegades, and plays with them CONSTANTLY. He plays with my big Hasbro Joes, and when his brother lets him his 1/18th Joes. If he comes downstairs on a Saturday morning and I'm playing some CoD, he calls it "playing the Joe game".

So I don't know what to say about this move to ditch Renegades in favor of concentrating on the next film. Unless this movie is going to be a complete 180, I can't see it being a good move. The fact that they are keeping Channing Tatum seems to indicate that they don't get where some of the problems were with the first film.

I'd think if they took all that money they were planning on wasting on this film, and put it into a Renegades big budget animated big screen release, it would be a much better move for the brand. Renegades, wether you like it or not, is more well written then RoC, and it has a better plot. Wether it's an "A-team" plot, or not. Scrapping a project that has talent and promise to rehash one that left a bad taste in the mouth of critics and the collector base seems a little stupid. Though I'm not in the toy business. :/

I love it, I will continue to love it for as long as I am given the opportunity, and I will love it all over again and even more on DVD.

I didn't get into GI Joe back in the day, Renegades is what introduced me to the whole shebang, so, ya know... Now I'm getting more into the old stuff as well, and I have this show to thank for being my gateway drug.

And I really like the art style, which it seems puts me in a minority...

Let's see...

Descent Pt 1 & 2
Introduced and established the personalities of the entire main cast, Cobra's role in the world, the creation of the Bio-Vipers, and killed off two characters to establish the tone of the series.

Rage
Introduced James McCullen and Scrap Iron, laid the groundwork for the mechs and a potential relationship with Baroness.

Dreadnocks Rising
Introduced Zartan and his crew, another major player.

The Package
Introduced Maj Bludd and Breaker (who continues to be a precense even in eps he doesn't appear in), unlocked a lot of weapons and gadgets on their ride, and gave the Coyote it's new name and look, which is a small, but permanent change.

Busted
Filler episode. Well written though.

Return of the Arashikage 1 & 2
Lesse, introduced Storm Shadow and Jinx, gave their origins along with Snake Eyes (who up until that point was a mystery), and even had the balls to end end on a downer.

The Enemy of My Enemy
Showed James McCullen being turned into Destro, further evolution of the Bio Vipers, another person dies, and further cements Cobra Commander's place as an utterly vicious bastard, setting up a lot of potential backstabbery between both.

Homecoming 1 & 2
Meet Duke's family, get to see his and Flint's backstory, Lady Jay's backstory with Duke, the team gets their first look at the true Cobra Commander, Storm Shadow joins Cobra, Flint starts to think there is something wrong with the situation, and we see visible signs of Baroness's growing displeasure with Cobra Commander.

Firefight
Introduces Firefly.

Brothers of Light
Introduces the Twins, who become essential later on.

Snowblind
Further evolution of the Bio Vipers.

So yeah, not only is your argument completely invalid, it's patently ridiculous and laughable. You can't even argue that it's just your opinion because I've factually proven they have done something, quite a lot of something, in the episodes thus far.

I want to like it more, but it just isn't very "Gi Joe" to me. Them being these "Renegades" rolling around helping people. It's still too "A-Team" for me. Scarlett=Face, Tunnel Rat=Murdock, Roadblock=B.A. Barackus, and Duke=Hannibal. I don't know where Snake Eyes fits in to that theory.

I like it! We're big fans at our house. My 7 and 4 year olds love it and look forward to watching it every time it's on. I like it personally as well. It's neat to see a new take on something that still has some of our favorite characters attached. I think it's good to have this sort of update. I mean, I think the gold standard is the Marvel comics, but at the hospital I work at, we are treating 60 year olds for lung cancer who served in Viet Nam, so I knew that as tough as he is, the SE we've known couldn't be around forever. Nice to have a little update.

I liked it overall.

Parts of it weren't that good, but the stories tried to have some depth and they did really good with what could have been horrible (the Duke/Flint backstory).

I liked that they had a plan for it and were building towards something.

Didn't like the "guest star" of the week format and the cameos were starting to annoy me.

Too much ninja.

But overall I enjoyed it.

IDK, I think it is kind of fun seeing who they are going to introduce each episode. My gripe with it, however, is not knowing if said cameo is going to play a larger part in the future. They seem to meet someone and then move on, except for Breaker.

Too much ninja.

Agreed! But to me, almost any ninja is too much ninja. I'm just not a big fan of the ninja-lore. My least favorite episodes have been the Arashikage ones.

Renegades at least has a story.

I agree that it would be nice if the cameo's had some larger role. if we knew that they would it would give the characters more meaning and more strength instead of just being "whose name gets dropped this week".

Eventually they won't be Renegades and would be a more tactical unit. Would they really need a straight fireman like Kelly? So will that character ever be back or was it just a "cheap" way to get the BBQ name into the story so us diehard fans can go "ooohhhh"?

yeah that's just one character though. if they did form a unit latter on then i could see snow job coming back, tunnel rat calling on an army buddie to help out with the "new" team. plus he would reunite timber and snake eyes.
i could see steeler coming back, i remember him saying something like if you guys ever need anything or any help let me know. i could also see stalker joining up, who had a bit cameo in an episode, duke asking his old sarge to join the new unit.
long shots would be law and order, but still possible, doc, and barbeque. then there's flint and lady jaye who i'm sure would be part of the team.

Troynos

It all depends on what kind of unit it ends up being.

Take Doc for example..

Duke: "Okay guys we're forming a tactical ops unit, we need a medic."
Roadblock: "Hey, what about that one guy we ran into for a couple of hours back in Chicago awhile ago."
Flint: "Why not grab a seasoned combat medic from the military instead?"

yeah it does, and if there forming a unit that consists of non-miltary and miltary personal then my long shots become viable candidates.
question, if they ever did form a unit would flint still out rank duke? would they promote duke?
or would they be part of a unit where mililtary rank does not apply?
like say the end result of "renegades" is that cobra does take over the world. and then the joes form a unit from all the cameos and go underground like in sunbow's awesome "worlds without end" 2 parter.

Troynos
03-31-2011, 11:23 AM
Flint would outrank Duke, which will make it hard when/if they form a unit together.

Some of the cameos would still feel odd to me if they showed up as part of an official unit, military and non-military even.

Doc? What kind of impact did he have on the story? He was just the guy in the hospital.

Pulaski/Kelly and Lavigne could possibly be guys that they bring in.

Pulaski/Kelly especially since they are already on an anti-Cobra leaning.

I just see so many of these cameos being nothing more then namedrops in the end. Which would really change my opinion on the show.

"I just see so many of these cameos being nothing more then namedrops in the end. Which would really change my opinion on the show"
here i agree with you. the only 2 meaningfull "joe" guest stars/cameos have been snow job and barbeque. snob jow i could definitely see joining up without it feeling odd. barbeque joining might seem a bit a strange, but if you take into account that he's actually ex-cobra and my have a real gripe against his former employer then maybe it may not be that odd.

The show DOES have potential and what we all need to keep in mind is that despite "officia"l Rank duke led the joes. So many other joes did outrank him yet he was in charge. Also it was a unit born out of neccesity to combat cobra who wasnt military in the truest sense so there needed to be a unit made to be able to strike back but also not bound by true militaristic channels like a normal unit or even a spec ops unit so joe was born. Bearing that in mind they had leeway to recruit not only military operatives but civilian as well so with that thought in mind i can see some non-military folks like law n order, bbq and others being recruited and given joe training ( if memory serves joes had their own specific training as well.) sadly this will not happen since hasblow is nixing the series and I predict a more bruce timm like movie versed cartoon with those bland ass outfits and robocop suits and crappy designs. yeeeaaahhhhh....

Pros:
1. Decent story for each episode
2. Pacing
3. Character dialog
4. Animation

Cons:
1. Artistic Styling is way too overdone. Characters are horribly anatomically disproportionate.
2. Every character has to announce their codename. Really? It would only be viable if there were indeed toys being made for each one. At this point, outside the four shown at TF 2011, it won't happen before 2013.
3. Storm Shadow. Why does he have peyos? Please remove them for f%^& sakes!
4. Flint hasn't the least suspicion that Cobra should be closely monitored for terrorist activity? How dumb are trying to make them?
5. The damn truck, what can't it do?
6. Continuity, after this is over with, they are going to have the hardest time explaining how Duke becomes field leader of the Joes in a war like environment.

Troynos
03-31-2011, 11:48 AM
Duke only led in the cartoon and the DDP "cartoon-inspired" changes.

In the "real" (:) ) comic he was where he should be, under the command of others. Falcon led the Trucial Abysmia mission, not Duke.

It was an uninteresting reboot of the Joe characters. I'm tired of reboots. It's like a shitty alternate universe for Joe characters. Atrocious animation and corny new looks given to existing characters. Did Roadblock need those stupid sideburns? I gave up after 6 episodes of pure crap.

I'm torn on this one.

I hate the art style. Can't stand it. The stories are often very juvenile yet still somewhat entertaining.

I'm one of those people who responds well to multi-media products. While I like the new Joe comics I can't really get attached to them because there are no figures for them. With the showing of the mega-awesome Renegades toys, my appreciation for this show has risen dramatically.

However, that being said, I don't really care whether there is a season two or not as far as the actual show is concerned. How it effects the release of the toys based on it though does push me to want another season.

So I'm kind of inbetween. I voted yes though as I really want the toys and really like them.

I actually really like a lot of the character designs, art style aside. I think many of the fundamental designs could easily translate into any art style, from realistic (e.g. Renegades Duke toy) to stylized (as in the toon). Among my favorite design upgrades are Mindbender, Scarlett, Major Bludd, Jinx...oh, and Serpentor, no doubt.

It's really a shame that Hasbro chose to put this show on hiatus as I felt that as a reboot it respected the past but was not afraid to go forth in a direction that updated the franchise in a fresh way.

I despised ROC (everything!), Resolute was meh (horrid writing), but Renegades found an excellent balance.

You know, I've been pretty happy with most of the changes and upgrades they've made in the show, like with Mindbender, Bludd, Scarlett, Zartan, etc. But the Noks were among the few that I kinda wish they had just taken the ARAH Nok designs and transferred them into Renegades (for the most part). Sans the Australian accents. Firefly is another that I feel this way about. And SS, to some extent.

I'm not too keen on Mindbender's design. It strays away too much of how I allways pictured him. If they would have made him balled and gave him a mustache and kept everything else, I'd be fine.

Man I hope Renegades doesn't get canned. After seeing the figures today, that would be plain unethical.

I completely understand where you are coming from. Although you have to think that he will eventually get to that look, I really believe this. Although he doesn't look like his ARAH version, I actually really like his "new" look. I like that fact that Mind bender is a smart ass little punk that likes to expirement with stuff he is not suppose to, kind of fits, atleast for me. Kind of like a kid (mad scientist) in a candy store (unlimited funding). I never liked Mindbender before, but now I actually want to make a custom of him... The ARAH version looked as if he was an English Noble man (the whole eye glass thing) with a horrible since of style (no shirt with purple pants). I agree with you though, because you did state that they should use the bald head and mustache, and I think they will eventually get there. Look at what they have/are doing with Storm Shadow. I think Roadblock is going to get on a diet soon too so that he looks like his ARAH version. Anyway, my opinion.

Indeed. I like the traditional scientist in white lab coat and I like the fact that Mindebender is kinda like a mad geneticist, but his face is what throws me off. I wouldn't even have known it was Mindbender if they hadn't have addressed him as such. Mindbender's bald head and stupid mustache is what made him stand out to me. I'll admit though the original Mindbender reminded me of a circus ring leader or somthing and not a mad scientist.

I was unsure about this series and after the first 4 episodes I began to enjoy how the characters were beginning to gel as a unit. Now with the release of the figures later on this year (shame we didn't get a Roadblock,Baroness,Destro,Zartan,Jinx,Barbeque or Mindbender figures-but hope that we'll see these and/or old & new characters released later on down the line)
All in all I'm not too sad about the series going on hiatus but look forward to a strong 2nd season.

As far as Mindbender goes, I for one am 100% in favor of his Renegades update. I know a lot of people have complained, from the beginning, that he's annoying as hell and they can't stand his personality--but I think this is partly what makes him work so well as a villain. He actually reminds me of people I've known or met in my life--albeit, a much more extreme version, but still, who hasn't met, worked with, gone to school with, a completely arrogant, loud mouth, scrawny little prick with a massive ego, like Mindbender? These little slimy digital-age monsters are everywhere in our modern world, and you can't very well go up and punch or slap them in the face. At least in Renegades one of them, Mindbender, will get his comeuppance, and I'm sure it will be very rewarding to see, when it happens.

I love the series. I am totally behind the Dr. Mindbender and Serpentor character changes. Like most everyone, the designs threw me off at first but I acquired a taste for it to where I don't give it a second thought since the episodes are so enjoyable. Not to say I love everything about Renegades - I don't like that the Crimson Twins don't seem to have any combat capabilities. Not a fan of Breaker's accent, and not sure I like Destro's look.

At first when I saw the animation style I was very skeptical as to whether the story would even make up for it. Was still going to give it a shot, of course, but I didn't hold out hope it'd keep my attention.

Several episodes in and I'm still watching it. I loved the whole "A-team" aspect of the team being ont he run for "a crime they didn't commit" and how they help out when need be. I love how they drop characters in in uniquely different ways (Bar-B-Que having worked for Cobra for one/Crimson Twins being cult leaders).

Even my wife is loving it and watches it with me, which definitely says a lot towards the way the writers have crafted this series.

I would have to say Renegades is my second favorite reinvention of an old intellectual property. First and foremost I would have to say the new Avengers cartoon is the best reinvention; however, Renegades is second.

I really want to see where they could go with the story so far, it definitely has an 80s Friday night television program feel to it. But I hope they don't get bogged down in the minute points of the Joes being an updated A-Team. I really want to see GI Joe fully formed, backed by the government, with Hawk as the leader.

But to answer the question, I like the cartoon as it is. I just hope it continues to grow and puts pieces where they need to be.

Don't much care for it to be honest.
