I mean seriously, if we woulda gotten something more realistic, people woulda bitched about that and said " oh it's nothing like the cartoon...where's all the action and the adventure, and characters...blah blah blah. Sommers mixed a little bit of past with the future and still people bitch about it. In all these hate threads I have yet to see anyone come up with a feasible solution that would push Gijoe into a direction that would keep it marketable and relevant. Let it up to some of the haters and we get a james bond movie with 50 different characters running around. Well sorry folks, for this day and age on the big screen, in a live action movie, that's just not gonna work. And the arguments with bad acting need to rest, i mean for petes sake some of the actors have been nominated for best actor/actresses in a variety of Award programs.
I've just found all these arguments unfounded on anything substantial and more or less just bitter hatred becasue people cant move on from the past(not everyone) but alot of people. I mean, sure hate the movie if you must, but how bout a logical and tangible reason, and an equally logical and tangible solution is you can find one.
Okay. I don't give two craps about other movies that win awards when those movies weren't truly award worthy. I mean, Shakespeare In Love beat out Saving Private Ryan for best pic. That makes no sense when you consider that Spielberg won for best director that year (for SPR). All some of us deemed "haters" are doing is trying to reason with the fact that this movie can't hold it's own against all the war and espionage movies of the past ten years, or so. On it's own, without comparison to these other movies, it still stinks.
And this isn't a hate thread any more than the boneheads on the other side of the argument are part of the love thread. Most of the entertainment in the world from music to movies is disposable. Most things you see and hear will be forgotten in no time (just like this movie), and everyone will always come back to the old stuff that was good. True, the corniness and camp and harebrained stuff that we saw in the cartoons 27 years ago were in this movie, but we were kids back then. We matured, G.I. Joe: ROC didn't.
I can move on from the past. I never said I was still in the eighties. I was more interested in seeing a G.I. Joe film that was different, yet reminiscent of the old comics with maybe a little bit of the cartoons thrown in. And who says G.I. Joe can't be thought provoking? Obviously, the lovers of this garbage want to sit in a theater staring at the screen with blank looks on their faces cheering on characters that are total morons. I don't care that Ripcord is black, or that the Baroness doesn't have an accent when I'm watching something about as bad as the worst cartoon episode from the eighties.
And what do I think they should have done? I think they should have pared down the number of Joes to about 6 members with Hawk as a seventh. The team should have been Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Duke, Flint, and either Lady Jaye or some character they never used much in any past incarnation. They should have used the Scarlett/Snake Eyes love story, and they should have made Cobra more realistic as far as terrorist organizations go. The comic was full of high tech stuff, but Larry Hama pulled it off better than the writers of the movie. Anyway, less characters would have been nice. No background characters, no cameos, no nothing. If they wanted to mention someone else, then they could have just said so-and-so's on another mission. Let's see. I think they could have made the story in the same vein as the World War III story arc. I mean, a good, fast paced story that has some questionable elements, but doesn't make try to make you accept something as stupid as suits that make you crash through stuff and land on concrete without tearing a ligament. That's so Battleforce 2000!! This high tech junk kinda replaces the necessity for these characters to have any skill when it comes to actually solving problems. I would have kept flashbacks to a minimum, but Snake Eyes origin flashbacks would have been cool. It worked for Wolverine in X-Men. A smaller group of heroes would have kept the story tighter, and would have given the writers more focus. That would have been the first step to making this story one I would have cared about.
The tech would have been cool if they'd made it limited. I like how the James Bond movies always have that little scene with Q where he shows Bond the new gadgets he'll be using, and we get to see all the stuff being worked on in the background. They wouldn't have had to copy that per se, but something similar would have been more than accepted by me. They might as well have used laser guns, too. I mean, bullets are so old fashioned. LOL.
I think hisstank.com should have a contest for people to submit their full story synopsis for either a sequel or a rewrite of this turkey.
I could go on and on, but it's someone else's turn to make their comments.
