Yes, that was me as Snake Eyes. I'll be glad to tell you all I know.
I became aware of this project about a year ago. I had the costume that you saw in the video made after a long process of trying to get it 'just right' over a few years. If you check out the myspace page noted in my signature graphic, you can see photos of the progression of this suit (on the photos link).
In any case, yeah, about a year ago, I was attending San Diego Comic Con (2008). The guy you see playing Drednok Ripper approached me after he saw me walking around and thought my outfit would be perfect for the role of Snake Eyes in the project him and his friend had been piecing together for about 10 years. His friend was the guy you see playing Torch and the director of the video. These guys are true fans of the G.I. Joe ARAH brand and they wanted to make this perfect.
So Ripper, or using his real name - Kevin, told me a little bit about the idea and gave me his business card. I have to be honest, I wasn't too hot about the idea because I was from out of town, I didn't know who he was and I had my guard up being some place I wasn't too familiar with. But I kept his card and I passed along my email address I have for the suit to allow him to reach me. At this time, he only knew me as "Snake Eyes".
San Diego Comic Con 2008 came and went and I flew back home.
A year passes by and I'm getting ready to get to San Diego Comic Con again, this year to do some work for Sideshow Collectibles. Kevin reaches out to me again to tell me that he'd really like me to be in the video project. I was still a bit apprehensive, but I had to give him some credit if he was this patient and focused on getting me to be in this production, which I still had no real clue about, then I would at least hear him out. I got some news over email that gave me a bit of perspective to this video and after reading the details, I decided to give it a shot. I arrived in CA on the Thursday and got to San Diego that night. We had communicated over email and we agreed to contact each other once I was at the con, to verify my whereabouts in the convention center.
The Saturday of the convention is when I met the director, Dan, a.k.a. Torch. The plan was that we would film my piece of the video that night at a studio just outside the down town area. We took off around 6:30 or 7, or so, met up with Kevin who was waiting just outside the convention, then drove off.
We made a stop at a hotel prior to arriving at the studio to get some photos of another person, a gentleman by the name of Len, who has a really impressive Cobra Trooper uniform - best I've seen. Dan needed some stills of Len in costume at the hotel, then he got some stills of both Len and myself in action poses, heh. After that, Dan, Kevin and I were off to the studio.
We got to the studio and I dressed down a bit to my not-so-threatening version of the suit. Basically removing the tactical vest and removing all the weapons I usually carry around at these cons. The striped-down version of my gear looks like,... well, you saw what it looks like in the video. You can see a better shot of it looking at pics in my profile here on Hisstank - I was dressed the same way in a parade on the 4th of July this year. With my outfit now ready, we began filming what they wanted me to do, which was to basically appear as if I were painting a picture. Dan filmed while Kevin worked the lighting.
The real cool thing about these two guys was that they were looking for true-ness of character, comedy aside. You can see this looking at the video, but what really showed this was during taping. Dan would ask me if I felt there was anything wrong about what was being filmed. I noticed there were a few things about my wardrobe that needed correcting for the sake of looking somewhat accurate - primarily the bands on my biceps and the area of my mask near my chin - it had a tendency to creep up and look "off". We'd have to correct that every so often.
So we filmed. There was that scene and then there is the other scene that would throw a lot of people off only because it's partially incorrect. In the video, after I'm done painting the picture, I walk up to a glass and put my hand on it. We were trying to do an homage of the scene from the M.A.S.S. Device where Snake Eyes gets cut off from the rest of the team and puts his hand up to the glass as the radiation gas starts to fill up in the cave. We knew it would be wrong because the outfit did not match with his first version gear - we even youtube'd it to verify, but we did it anyway. It worked out nice in the video regardless if the idea was totally missed, right?
Well, after two hours or so of filming, that was a wrap as they say. I signed the paper work release and .. heh, this was the real cool thing - I also signed the standing platform for the Snake Eyes action figure. Kevin had each person who played a role in the video sign the stand of the character they portrayed. It was difficult to do, but funny and very appreciative. Kevin drove me back to the resort I was staying at and that was the end of my day.
From what I can tell you, each of the individuals unless they were actually shown with another person on film had each of their scenes filmed individually. Filming wasn't all done in the same place, or at least that's what I recall hearing them say. I'm actually quite impressed with how quickly these two were able to put it up because on the drive to the studio where we filmed my piece, I saw some of the footage they had mixed in with concept art to flow along with the music. The concept art I saw was for Destro and the Baroness, the Crimson Twins, and a few other characters that I can't quite recall at the moment.
