One of the first Rise of Cobra figures that I found at Target was the Elite Viper. I was instantly smitten. The figure had a real attitude about it, and I liked that.
Cobra Elite Viper - "Elite Regiment Officer"
Sculpt:
The sculpt on the Elite Viper is top notch. While basic, it covers all the required basics, and does them all well. The figure has weathered shoulder, elbow, and hand guards, which are made to look like they have seen some serious action. His hands are molded correctly, and he can grip his guns, or other items with ease.
Under his armor is a molded shirt, simple but effective. His legs are sculpted as basic BDU pants, with no bulging pockets anywhere to be found. The Elite Trooper comes with a nice pair of black combat boots to round out the very nice sculpt.
Articulation:
I have noticed that most Rise of Cobra figures have great articulation, superior to many G.I. Joe 25th anniversary figures, and the Elite Viper is no exception. The figure has full movement of his arms and legs. He can hold his weapon in many positions, including the "to the shoulder" position, which is much appreciated.
One of my pet peeves, this figure can successfully "take a knee", or kneel down on one leg and support himself, with or without a stand. This is a common tactical position, but many 25th figures had a hard time with this position, so it is very nice that this figure does not suffer the same issues.
Paint:
The overall paint job on the Elite Viper is good. Apart from the weathered pads, he is essentially wearing a one color uniform, and there were no discolorations or other blemished that I could notice. The weathered parts are very nice, they look worn without going overboard. His boots are solid black, but that works fine.
The head sculpt is a little odd, he has a shiny black mask. It is the only part of the figure that is painted glossy, and it is a little strange at first, but I have come to like it.
Accessories:
The figure comes with a removable weathered chest plate, which fits well and does not hinder any articulation. He also comes with a black cargo backpack with a notch for the Axe. The backpack is kind of bland, and I do not display my Elite Viper with it, but it's always nice to get accessories.
He also comes with a nice pistol belt, with a drop holster. It fits well around his waist, and hangs properly on the figure. I believe it would be removable if you took the lower legs off.
The figure comes with a black pistol that fits in the drop holster, two nicely sculpted black sub-machine guns with full stocks, and an Axe-type weapon that fits in the backpack.
Packaging:
The Elite Viper comes in the standard Rise of Cobra packaging, with artwork on the left side of the package and the figure placed on the right. Decent artwork for the Elite Viper, the back of the package has his "file card" with minor details about the character.
The design of the packaging makes it almost impossible to get the figure out of the box without destroying the packaging and artwork, which is annoying to me, but ultimately matters little I'd imagine.
Verdict:
Overall is not an average.
Overall I really love this figure. Like I mentioned, this was one of the first figures I got from the Rise of Cobra line, and if it wasn't for this figure's excellence, I do not think I would have gone out and picked up more figures.
This figure is sculpted very nicely, looks smooth and imposing. Like most Rise of Cobra figures, he has excellent articulation, allowing you the ability to pose him in a number of positions. The paint is pretty good, if somewhat bland, but it gets the job done well.
I really like the sub-machine guns that the Elite Viper comes with, they are just the right size for the figure, and allow him to hold them in realistic poses. The axe and backpack are mostly throwaway items, but they could be useful for customs.
I really like this figure, and hope to find more. He is packaged with a "Collection 2" assortment, and is packed 1 to a case, so he may be a bit hard to find for a while.
