I don't know what a good first job is, but I can tell you my jobs:
I started off working with my dad spreading pinestraw. Work sucked and your dad as a boss sucks too, but one summer I made around $1000 (I was early teens, not even 16 yet)
First real job was a dishwasher at Quicey's family steak house. My friend talked me into it with tales about playing around and having fun all the time.....he became a chef and I was stuck in a small room by myself with dishes up to the ceiling. My bosses thought it was a good idea that they leave an hour between dishwasher shifts with no dishwasher around at all. Geniuses they were. I rejoiced when the place closed.
I was a delivery person for a sandwich shop in the downtown area (No car involved) It was nice, but my boss didn't give me all the info I need to know the first day (Like how I need to keep all my tips from that day because she wasn't providing change after the first day) The pay sucks too, it was the same as being a witer, you get something like $2.14 and hour and you get to live off of your tips
Later moved on to a dishwasher/general maitence at a fancy resturant/bar. It was small so the dishes were always done
Then there was gas station attendant. You don't see it much anymore, but some stations have a booth out with the gas pumps, that was me. It was fun until I was moved inside the store when they got rid of the booth. One thing about gas station work. Me and my mom worked in these type places (at different decades of time
) She worked her way up to manager of one place, I stayed loyal drone where I worked, but in both cases, even though we seemed to be liked and such, after we quit (on good terms even) there were rumors that we stole stuff on our last day or were involved in embezzling funds. Be prepared when you leave one of these stores, there will be rumors.
After that I found my career. Master Control Operator at a local TV station. Back in the day when I started there was a lot of work. You were the one to run all the commercials. Each 5, 10, 15, 30, and 60 second commercial was on a seperate three quarter inch tape (Think really big vhs type of cassette) and we had 6 decks to play each tape out of (Usually 2 of these were broken) We'd have the tapes set up with a 2 second preroll and at the control board we'd hit a preroll button to start the first tape then a transition button to put the first tape on air, this would repeat till the whole break had run. If there were 7 or more tapes to air, during one of the commercials, you had to eject the tape that had already run, then insert the new one and get it set to preroll. this was especially bothersome when all the spots would be 15 seconds long
Anyway, nowdays it's all computerized and automated so it's basically just babysitting a computer and manually running breaks during live news and such. The intersting thing about this job is that you control what goes on the air, and yet at most all of the stations I've worked at (5 at this time) it's an entry level position. You can just come in off the street and control a TV station!
I also had a stint as a Production Assistant at a TV Station (you become cameraman, audio guy, prompter runner, etc...) But it's fun (after you get used to how to do everything) and the morning crew are usually the most fun loving (I guess you have to be when you're at work around 4:45AM)
