That's what killed G.I. Joe. Spring-loaded weapons had nothing to do with it.
Preee-freaking-cisely. The 80's kids grew up and stopped buying toys (like most of the people in the world do) and no new collectors came in (because they were into different franchises that had their own TV shows and such long after G.I. Joe had left the airwaves). The phenomenon of the "adult toy collector" didn't even really exist at the time, and even if it did, their numbers were so small that they couldn't possibly keep the line alive themselves (especially since video games hadn't yet really started supplanting toys as the main draw for the kiddies).
Even
Transformers
very nearly disappeared at the time..."Generation 2" came out but basically fizzled, and it wasn't until the reinvention that was Beast Wars popped up that it attracted a new audience that kept that franchise strong.
Along the way, Hasbro re-introduced the
Star Wars
line to toy shelves, and voila...a few years later 80's nostalgia was in full-swing and the adult collector became a viable demographic to market to. Kids were still where the big money was at, but at least there was a "fall back" now.
