The list of characters I'm willfully ignoring is basically this:
- Battleforce 2000
- Any character introduced after 1988 (nothing against them, I just find it too much trouble to incorporate that many "named" characters... re-writing/factually updating the files alone would be way too much work, not to mention having to do the digital art)
- Cobra-La (including Serpentor)
- cross-promotional "celebrity" Joes (The Fridge, Sgt. Slaughter)
- Taurus and Red Dog
- Big Lob
- The Iron Grenadiers (Destro, in my mind, has always worked better as a character in the role of the rational counterpart to the impulsive Cobra Commander within the Cobra organization, instead of the leader of his own paramilitary group... it takes him away from his interactions with the rest of the Cobra leadership, where the contrast makes him that much more interesting to me. By himself, he just comes off as bland)
Additionally, I'm redesigning most of the armor crewman guys (i.e., Heavy Metal, Frostbite, etc.) as Cavalry Scouts, thus making it more plausible for them to be assigned to a light infantry/spec-ops/recon unit like how I imagine GI Joe to be while still technically falling under the armor branch. The artillery guys (i.e., Thunder, Grand Slam), I'm re-purposing as fire support specialists/forward observers/joint fires observers. Again, they'll still be considered Artillery branch personnel, but at least their duty designation will fit in with a non-mechanized joint interdiction unit like GI Joe. I'm redesigning Steeler as GI Joe's Fire Direction Officer (he does have ties to Artillery according to his original filecard), an essential position in with a joint direct action/interdiction unit.
The Air Force pilots are a bit of a problem. I just don't see how a team the size of GI Joe (in my mind, a 300-strong unit) can be accorded a full-time fixed wing complement. I can see one of the fighter pilots (maybe Slip-Stream?) being attached to the Joe team as an Air Liaison Officer (basically the Fire Direction Officer's counterpart in charge of coordinating with external Air Force assets), but what to do with the others? Ace can be one of the staff officers... he can be the unit S-2 (his secondary specialty is intelligence according to his filecard), but what of Ghostrider and Payload?
I like the rehash of the armor guys. Only problem with someone like Frostbite is well I never can find a way to incorporate Arctic guys they are just their onw thing.
Yeah Air Force guys are hard as fighter pilots. Maybe as night Stalkers crewmen and then make them all part of it's crew but even then, the Joes just wouldn't get a dedicated air Support unit. How do you use the Laser guys? Spotters? Snipers?
I think when you look at post 88 there are only so many guys worth using so you're not missing much. You could start at 87. Still guys you may miss as you finish your teams, (based on what you've shown us)
Recoil
Pathfinder
Ambush (especially as a Spotter)
Crosshairs
Wreckage
Dart
Mace if you needed more HUMINT guys
Freefall and all SkyPatrol to go with Ripcord
