Now looking back at old file cards, There seems to be the beginning sentence in the first section that alludes to why they joined and it gives a very brief background. I always liked that part.
The bottom section where Hawk or someone else puts in their two cents gets pretty cheesy no matter what, but I do remember liking that as a kid. But by 87 when the format changes I was much older so I didn't buy into it as much. I actually like the ones better for example when someone is quoted as saying "All Marines are crazy but Gung-Ho is the hairiest, Scariest, craziest Jarhead...."
As I like the realism more now I would almost prefer all cards to read like Zulu's example, but without some character presented they differ little from Bravo team figures or Corps figures.
Still we got a lot of bad ones over the years as evidence that it is not the easiest thing to do, without being cheesy.
