My snow serpent can't even keep his backpack from falling off. I've had a number of them break right out of the package trying to move their fused joints. Not to mention that half of them can't even be put in any kind of sitting position without looking ridiculous. I have stopped buying the 25th line simply because they just don't hold a candle to the ARAH line. Sure, the first thirteen figures from 1982 tend to be brittle, but on the whole the ARAH line is still as sturdy and ready for rough play as they were the day they were manufactured.
Do you even own any ARAH figures?
The figures you call "laughable" are from the most iconic and epic toy line in history. There is no way the 25th line will EVER come close to matching the sheer expansiveness of the ARAH line. The "fragile pieces of crap that should have stayed in the 1980's" are what made your beloved 25th line possible. Have they done some cool things with the 25th line? Sure, the accessories (MASS device, camera, weather dominator) are a great addition and the detail work is great. But for my money, I'll take the ARAH.
Oh, I've got plenty of respect for them for what they were at the time. I've also got tons of respect for what the Commodore 64 did for computing. That doesn't mean it's not a shit box next to a G5. Put next to a current toy, they're crap. Broken I've never had a 25th peg tear and I rip them apart all the time for cstoms. ARAH figures crotches and thumbs were like glass. I had plenty of ARAH figures as a child. Plenty of them broke. The softer plastics of the newer figures are much more durable. I own almost every Modern Era figure. I've had no problems with joint looseness or accessories not fitting.
And no, I don't buy the 25th line out of nostalgia. I buy them because they're well-sculpted and well-engineered toys. Any nostalgic fondness I have isn't for the original toys, it's for the characters Hama created in the filecards and comics. Which ARAH figures are horrible horrible representations of. My favorite parts of the 25th line are where they either innovate entirely (Resolute figures) or move in a more modern direction (Comic Firefly, Wave 3 Zartan). I don't give a shit if they aren't slavish recreations of decades old army men.
