As a general rule most huge blockbusters don't ever really make a "profit." DVD sales have changed this dynamic significantly, but summer movies are simply written off as unprofitable period, but they bring in movie viewers for the summer session and increase awareness of the studio.
The studio generally makes lower budget pictures during the off season for hopes of higher profits and reduced operating costs and the extra profits are funneled into the areas the big budget pictures may have lost. This creates profitability for the distributor.
You also have to remember that there can be a half dozen companies affiliated with producing a film and those profits must be split amongst all the parties involved. Actors and producers even get cuts of the domestic gross for a certain number of weeks if they are expected to carry the film. The major studios simply act as distributors for most projects with other production companies such as revolution and legendary pictures are the actual production companies that MAKE the picture. Those finished films are then handed off to a distributor (Paramount, Warner Brothers) for distribution to the public, which sales, shipping costs, and marketing materials must all be paid for and negotiated.
This is not always the case, but is usually the way things go.
There is a reason why Hollywood has so much red tape.
SO, for a film to be profitable and gain a sequel, namely the production company, the film may only have to beat its budget, but overall, for all parties to get paid, and a distributor to risk on it, a film must break 3-4 times it's budget in order to be considered "profitable." This can take a decade or more to achieve, but DVD sales have changed this dynamic significantly (Part of the cause for the writer's strike).
