If you have the former "Toon Disney" (I think it's now called "Disney XD" or something), they've been airing quite the treasure trove of Marvel and DC cartoons since last year. Their schedule rotates frequently, but I've seen the following on there:
-Superman: The Animated Series
-Spider-Man (FOX, 1994-1997)
-X-men (FOX, 1992-1997)
-Spider-Man Unlimited
-Fantastic Four (1994-1995)
-Incredible Hulk (1996-1997)
-Avengers (1999)
-Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends (1982-1984)
Plus, "The Tick", which pops up occasionally. I can't recall if "Batman: TAS" and the 1994 "Iron Man" are on there, as well.
But getting back to the gist of this thread: I think that the issue with cartoons nowadays is that they're split into two camps:
1- the kiddie shows.
2- The "Adult Swim" type of shows.
It seems that older cartoons at least had some attempt to appeal to all ages. "Tiny Toon Adventures" or "Animaniacs" come to mind as shows that appealed to both schoolkids and older "kids". Heck, even old Looney Tunes and Woody Woodpecker shorts did that.
Today, it seems like your cartoon is either in one or the other. If you're funny and want to slip in wacky antics for 20-30 somethings to quote on message boards...then you make an "Adult Swim" type of cartoon. If you want merchandising and flashy noises, then you make stuff like the FOX saturday morning junk.
