My grandfather earned two bronze stars and a purple heart in WWII as an Infantry Officer... he wasn't kidding at all when he said that.
Yeah I know people love to kid the Chair Force officers, and it will always take a grunt with a rifle to win a battle, but there were some damn fine fighter pilots in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. It took some steel nerve to engage multiple fighters or to fly over a nest of SAMs or divebomb an armed ship that's firing hundreds of thousands of rounds at you. I met a retired colonel, an ex fighter pilot from WWII, who was also a POW in a Japanese camp. He wasn't on the Bataan Death March--he was on a similar one--but he saw some of the guys that were. His story is incredible. I bought his self-published book, Guests of the Emperor. It needed some editing, but he's a great writer nonetheless. This guy lived through incredible conditions. He was living off a spoonful of raw rice and a few ounces of rainwater in the bowels of a Japanese ship, the Oryoku Maru. During the peek of the cruise, thirty-five guys were dying a night from starvation or mental breakdowns. The ship was bombed and left to sink and those that managed to swim to shore were rounded back up and imprisoned again.
