Well, the quaility of the Indy figures was pretty craptastic. I intended to find an Indy figure, just one of them, to open and keep in my collection. Just one, from any of the movies, as long as he had the hat, whip, coat and a gun. Of the huge number of figures I looked at, I literally only found one figure that wasn't cross-eyes, or missing an eye or had paint on his pants or his sleeves went half way up the back of his hand. These are some of the things we're beginning to see in Joes. Since I get mine on the net, I haven't got te luxury of searchhing the pegs. The cross-eyed Quickkick I got in the DVD set is the only one I've ever seen in person, and I'm not going to pay 50 plus bucks for the one way up on the top shelf at the comic book store.
But when we're talking about Joe or Star Wars or Indy, we look at the lines from a collectors perspective. So, I've never really bought the idea that Wal-Mart Executive X is standing there on the aisle and opening these cases and wondering why only 2 figures sell out of a case of Indy figures. That's assuming a lot of effort and intricate interest on the part of a person or group that really has none. Indiana Jones figures sat on the shelves and that's all the retailers are looking at when they decide to increase or decrease orders. He-Man 2K was the same way. the stopped selling because the case assortments weren't up to the collectors standards because Mattel operated under the absurd assumption that this MOTU line was going to interest kids the way the original did. So, to keep the kids happy, there were 90% He-Man and Skeletor repacks or repaints in that line. The collectors shouted from every corner of the toy ailse and internet, but it was far too little too late. Retailers dropped the line and Mattel's hopes of regaining the glory days of the '80 went bust. Now, the accomodate the collectors community by releasing figures on the internet: only... Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Now, G.I Joes are apparently a different matter. They're selling pretty damn well, but there's also a new movie to consider. So, I think maybe Hasbro has everything riding on the movie. They're bracing for the failure of the toy tie-in by priming collectors for the internet only market because if the movie fails, retailers won't touch joe. I know Joe has been around for 30 years and have done well enough to keep its head above water, but retailers didn't invest as much as they will in the movie toys. This is why most retailers had 4 or 5 pegs and maybe a couple of feet for Sigma, while Star Wars and Batman and Power Rangers and whatever had so much more room. They don't care if it's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra or G.I. Joe A Real American Hero 25th Anniversay. They just see a name brand and a bottom line that's got to be met. Maybe I'm wrong, though.
