So the past few days with the discussion of GI JOE: Rise of Cobra. I couldn't help but think about "Masters of the Universe" that came out in 1987 with Dolph Lungren and Skeletor.
The movies are very similar, in the fact that the entire franchaise was reinvented to sell a film. While I personally love "Masters of the Universe", I know many fans do not. Many of the fans do not like this movie, and really it would have made more sense if they kept in Eternia. But He-Man was a simple fun cartoon, and the movie added more depth and grit to the franchise.
I think like GI JOE, the movie had to change things to make them more compatible in the real world. Skeletor looks awesome, as do his bounty hunters: Beast Man, Saurod, Blade, and Karg. He also had some interesting troopers, ones that looked as if someone had armed up the Death Star gunners. Whether you like the movie or not, it looks really good for a film where CGI wasn't used to tell the story.
I'm glad that GI joe will be a return to "guys in futuristic costumes" as opposed to having computer generated troopers we've been seeing. But I don't know if this will be the selling point of the movie. As the good guys are hard to distinguish from the bad.
So Masters of the Universe, was it good or bad?
