I'll add that the proliferation of the internet in general has been responsible, with youtube toy channels and other social media being at fault. The same has happened in the retro gaming community. In fact, some gaming youtubers put out "hidden gems" videos, and whenever one is released, the price will soar at least temporarily, whether the game is good or not. There's been a lot of talk as to whether or not the youtubers are trying to artificially inflate the value of their collections/inventory, which makes a ton of sense. More exposure=more people feeling nostalgic, which of course leads to supply/demand at work.
With GIJoe specifically, I bought online from 2000-2012ish, and the prices were fairly static, with some peaks and valleys here and there (there are of course exceptions, a '92 Ninja Viper for example did nothing but climb), though prices largely tumbled during the Modern Era. Fast forward to just this past year, and I've recently dumped a large portion of my collection. I was shocked at what some of the ARAH figures were selling for. $30 for an 86 Viper that I found with some patience at $11 or 12 and always said I'd never pay over $15 for is nuts, and don't even get me started on some of the pricier figures.
I'm with Ozzie 100% on the bubble bursting with the potential production of a new proper 4" line, as I've already seen it. I also with the statement in regards to the prices falling over the next decade, we're getting older, and soon there will be few of us left around to care about collecting them. A ton of collectors will "cash in" on their investments, which is currently happening with the original 12" line.
