To me the important thing is the Arashikage values, as well as the Joe values. There are lots of Arashikage from all over the world, no reason the 2020 version can’t be literally anyone with their heart and mind in the right place.
I think the movie is going to give us a 2020 Snake Eyes who is largely a new character, much like Throwdown and Dawn Moreno, someone who is basically a millennial or gen-z soldier coming out of Afghanistan or Iraq or ex-ISIL north Africa with some difficult s*** behind them, a chararcter with some of the same experiences as the OG Snake Eyes, and the same general ingredients of personal loss, physical injury, difficult wartime experience, & the discipline of martial arts and the personal bonds forged during those experiences being the way out of a personal hell and, at length, to reclaiming a life of service and honor.
I look at it almost like an earlier generation may have looked at TNG, after loving the original series of Star Trek. Maybe the stuff you grew up with will always be the best and your favorite, but that’s no reason a new generation can’t come along and become damn fine characters in their own right, and have some damn good adventures too. Larry already wrote the best treatment of the OG generation and that work won’t be unwritten just because someone else comes along and does something different— and frankly, this franchise can only benefit from bringing in some new energy, not least because it still has a lot to say that the world needs to hear, especially to young people who may not have heard it before.
I still read and love Larry’s books, and collect vintage and Black Major and watch the original toons, but new material is a huge positive for the community, and a quiet and principled professional with honor and a deep commitment to public service is a sorely needed message, and a great antidote to the unfortunate Hollywood image of the armed forces basically being a group of vapid loudmouth macho dominator types like that jerk from Avatar. It seems we’re still suffering from that Vietnam-era trope, both because it makes some good people wrongly hostile to the armed forces and because it energizes all the worst people and all the wrong, domineering choices. If you’ve been lucky enough to meet some real SF types, you know that that culture (of course w/ individual variation) does not respect the big-talking braggy bloviator type at all. Hopefully this film will be more about actually having character & working through your shit and less about horses in accelerator suits and ‘splosions and ridiculous Hollywood bravado. Snake Eyes is most important as a role model, not a specific guy who went from being Ron Howard in the 50s to Shinobi in the 70s.
Sean and Dawn are already that, as were the blind master and hard master and soft master and Billy and many others, and as are Tommy and granny and others too. If this guy is next, great. But he needs to live up to the values to earn it.
