GI Joe is going to be a story about everyday heroism in the face of overwhelming odds. It will be crafted, at first, largely around one-shot missions, in a format that will allow us to stretch out and really explore the world of GI Joe. At times it will be fun, at times it will be brutal. It will show the horrors of war, the dangers of fascism and the beauty and grace that can be found in even the worst of situations.
I also want to say that this isn't going to be, in any way, an "ironic" take on GI Joe. There's nothing wrong with that, per se: I did it in GI Joe: Deviations. But this book is something different.
Something else you won't have read elsewhere, yet: my Dad was a career Air Force enlisted man. He retired an E-7 after 20 years in (he probably would have stayed in longer, but he had some injuries that would continue to grow -- he spent the last couple decades of his life living off military disability), and was deeply, fiercely proud of his service.
I was born in Wilford Hall at Lackland AFB, so while I never served, the military has been a part of my life from when I took my first breath.
My Dad was also a lifelong smoker, and spent most of last year fighting lung cancer. Last fall things took a turn for the worse, and it became clear that his fight was almost over. I was out of the country at the time, but I started talking to him by phone daily instead of weekly, and during one conversation, in early October, I told him that I had been hired to write a new GI Joe book. And he was so, so proud of me, and so absolutely overjoyed. My older brother was there, and told me that after he got off the phone, he kept talking about it, and said, "Yeah, so I'm gonna go ahead and take some of the credit for that." Ha.
The next day, he collapsed and slipped into a semi-coma that he never recovered from. I flew back, and he died a few days later. And telling him that I was hired to write GI Joe turned out to be the last fully lucid conversation I ever had with him.
None of which has anything to do with the book. But I wanted to let you know that this is being written by someone with a deep respect for our servicemen and women, and a personal connection to the military. Our book, at Hasbro's request, is largely about civilians being recruited by an espionage organization during a time of war, but it will still absolutely honor those who serve, by telling a story that, while not jingoistic or nationalistic, will be rooted in stories of heroism, duty and sacrifice.
I am so proud, and so honored, to be writing GI Joe. No GI Joe story will make everyone happy, but I believe that the story we're telling will make the majority of the readership very happy. And I also believe that it would have made my dad very proud.
Thank you for the inspiration story. The bit about Hasbro is interesting, they are taking a more a more hands on approach to Joe comics. Maybe as an IP farm? The success of Spiderverse must have made them notice.
