Mains is channeling the spirit of modern comic book publishers with the way he keeps missing his deadlines.
Speaking of deadlines, I figure last issue's fill-in was due to the change in artists? Maybe they had trouble finding anyone willing to do Joe? Taking that into account, Wildman is a pretty good find, especially compared to some (all) of the pencil-pushers that came afterwards.
My relationship (professional) with Wildman is a long and complex one. I remember when I was a kid I hated his stuff in TF, with all those human faces and all kinds of gunk flying around all the time. As I got used to him, he actually became a favorite. Now... I'm somewhere in-between? It's the 90s, so everything is super-intense, and on the cover The B's head is the size of her boob. In the scene where she nut-shots CC she looks like one of those mid-00s DTC Joe figures with their minuscule heads. Her head's the size of her shoulder.
Wildman also wasn't necessarily the best fit for G.I.Joe. He mentioned in an interview he was never comfortable with the military aspect, and it shows in his art. The military realism will be pretty much absent from the title, and most of the guns will look like toys. But like I said, he was probably the best guy they could get by this point, so I'm satisfied.
Issue itself is ok. Yeah, the tempo is pretty leisurely, with several pages being spent on talking about how badass Snake-Eyes was, of course. It was cool seeing the return of the Silent Castle, even if it will end up getting as overused as the BWS. But I don't think we've had a lot of action in a mountainous setting, so this storyline is fine.
Did I mention yet how much I hate Ninja Force? That doesn't extend to Slice and Dice, actually, who were a good addition to the cast in an era when Cobra was struggling for personalities. For some reason it came as a surprise to me when I found out they were actual figures. I usually had a good eye for spotting the non-toys in the comic.
So what do you think is the deal with Slice and Dice? Are they brothers, or a couple or something? Are they legit Arashikage, or just posers like Rainbow Force? I always imagined them as some kind of neophytes whose job it was to mop the floors while SS and SE got to do all the cool stuff.
Funny scene when Slice sees a bunch of rainbow colored ninjas from the window, but they freeze and he loses them? What is he, a T-Rex or something? No, he just can't see anything through that tennis racket on his face. Slice is actually the new Blind Master.
Speaking of masters, gotta love the scene between D&B and the Red Ninjas. "We're under orders to eliminate all intruders, so I'll just use the ancient Arashikage technique of a completely harmless pole vault! Hey, no fair throwing stuff!"
The guy from Indiana Jones is the best of the lot, of course. His name is True Master. At least he got to look cool and score a couple of lines. And then we get the last two who are just hanging upside down sleeping like a pair of bats.
Slice incorrectly assumes as a ninja sword master he'd be superior to Destro in combat.
