In my headcanon Hama's Marvel G.I. Joe is more "real" than the filecards, cartoons, movie, or other comic books.
So if you are a Joe fan- even a young one- you have to read at least some of these. It is the best that Joe has ever been. G.I. Joe was just as fun as anything else Marvel (and DC) was putting out at the time. It did not feel like a regular army comic like Sgt. Rock and it wasn't as sci-fi/fantasy as S.H.I.E.L.D. It felt like it was a Marvel comic but not part of the MU, yet never felt like it was an outsider.
I feel Larry Hama is UNDERRATED as a creator when it comes to Top 100 lists and creators who are often cited as being the top of their comic book craft.
I also feel that G.I. Joe artists are severely underrated. It seemed like Jim Shooter assigned "reliable" or underpaid members of the Marvel Bullpen on the mag as opposed to the "hot" 1980s artists, but they all did better than expected. Herb Trimpe pumped out some of his best stuff and kickstarted everything. He was a great fit for the original 13 Joes. Mike Vosburg was even better. Michael Golden's covers were jaw-dropping, as were other guest cover artists. Even Rod Whigham had a style that fit the interiors.
As others have said, the main storyarc kinda starts with #10. It jumped the shark around #100+ or whatever, but it wasn't Hama's fault.
