Hasbro, with a much smaller "doll" foot print, gave the branding MUCH greater focus than Mattel was seemingly willing to give.
The move cost Mattel almost $500 million in revenue they've struggled to fill ever since. An amount not far off from where I've heard Star Wars brand revenue placed at from Hasbro... For More Reading:

To me, Jurassic World, with its robust scale rollout, is effectively a shot across Hasbro's bow, and might have garnered some attention considering how much more conservative Hasbro's efforts with the brand were in 2015.
Moreover, it is within Disney's interests to keep multiple major toy companies viable. Competition breeds better licensing terms for valuable properties (which Star Wars certainly is). Kicking Star Wars to Mattel, or Playmates or Bandai or Jakks would be a HUGE momentum shift in the action figure segment.
I figure we'll know NO LATER than Toy Fair 2020, and I suspect rumors will start circulating in late 2019. We got about a year's heads up on Disney Princesses and Power Rangers, so it will be REALLY interesting what impact a company move might have on potential Episode 9 toy sales.
Solo being on outlier....EACH Star Wars film since 2015 have been ENORMOUSLY successful. Hell, Force Awakens alone was one big push away from crossing ONE BILLION DOLLARS domestically. Rogue One and Last Jedi (for all its controversy) have done over a BILLION worldwide. And that's not even factoring in the merchandise sales. Disney doesn't need to "save their Star Wars investment", they've already recouped the purchase price on the new movies alone, much less merchandise and the pittance they're getting from the Lucasfilm and Lucasarts back catalogs.
Frankly, Star Wars needed a breather, which looks like we're getting this holiday season. I think being "over-Star Wars'd" is a bigger issue than the movies themselves.
Interesting article. Thanks for posting. Do we know that SW is still the money maker that the liscencing implies?

Aye. I guess we’d really need the hard numbers from retailers and Hasbro to see if SW is still worth its liscencing. WCB does make some interesting videos to give one the impression that the bulk of the SW merch is collecting dust, even at TRU’s deep discounts. But WCB is just basing his videos off of what we see in shelves. It would be nice to have hard data.
As far as that big ol’ can. December 2019 is going to be interesting. The films may have been profitable (except maybe Solo) but they seem to have been trending downward. Also Disney dished out 4B for the franchise. I’m assuming the movies and merch need to surpass that plus the films production costs before investors will be content.
