I would have to say its not about doing the custom , its about the creativity that is had from it. Customizing is not something you pick up and knock a home run on your fisrt go. it takes time to get your skills where you will like a custom figure much better then a Big toy company release.
I used to be just a collector, then I started customizing and never turned back. Everey figure in my collection will end up a custom at some point.
i still have some joes on display, but as time goes on, the shelves get less and less full, I go after fodder and the shelves are my first go point.
Also customs bring a much needed change to a figure. I grew up with some of these looks, I would like new takes and fresh ideas on them. When you limit yourself it tends to get boring after a while, and why so many collectors get the "BURN", you know the that feeling, when you walk into your toyroom or hobby area and see all your collecting stuff just sitting on shelves, and you think, Damn i spent alot of money on this stuff just to sit here. Hppens to alot of guys, and first thing they think, I should sell all this shit, which you never really make back what you paid.
All in all customs bring you face to face with your toy, make you handle them and pose them, and in my book, thats playing with them.
