Hey, another special mission that involves an old plane. Trimpe's art is good in this issue.
I gotta wonder why Iceberg and not Alpine, but Iceberg was newer and hadn't done anything yet. So what if his toy was probably no longer in stores?
At least Dakotas were still being flown in some regions at that time (I think they still are), but why Iceberg would fly it is beyond me. Hey - the Joes did just get a new pilot who wasn't involved in the Cobra civil war . . .
I wondered about the Iceberg vs Alpine choice too. More below.

After being sufficiently entertained by #77-78, I bought another Finnish issue, which contained SM #14-15. Thing is, after I had bought the book, I found out the friggin' issue was in Swedish!! Which I didn't understand at the time. But hey, I doubt I would've understood this story, anyway. Complete gibberish. Couldn't even tell it was Chuckles in this issue. I just figured it was Duke or someone.
As it is, it was so meh I guess I decided Joe wasn't for me, after all. In fact, it was so meh I often have trouble remembering this was actually my second issue. In general, I must have gone through a bad period, as I had a gap in reading the Transformers-comic, too. Still trying to figure out what crisis I was going through. I can only guess I must have been in my TMNT-fandom phase, which almost ruined my life!
Good grief - what a way to start reading the comics. I'm surprised you gave it a second chance.

Maybe Blizzard could have debuted anywhere.
Blizzard . . . or Hit n Run. He's a mountain guy. Heck - this issue could have been Iceberg, Blizzard, Hit n Run, Alpine, and a pilot (say, Windmill). Plus Anderson. But apparently if it's Special Missions it needs Chuckles, and if it involves a "mystic religion" it needs Snake Eyes.
In 1988 the Dalai Lama announced the Strasbourg Proposal. Perhaps that's what inspired this 2-parter. Which, to give Hama credit, meshed with the Cobra Civil War with Hawk's slightly inaccurate issue 77 statement "All the Joes are on the USS Flagg except for Snake Eyes, Scarlett, and the rest [ouch - way to point out how disposable "the rest" are] that went to the Himalayas." Some of the political commentary is clumsy, but it's working within the constraints of speech bubbles, and working in references to historical US Civil War figures, Sun Tzu (though why that should be limited to issues involving China is also clumsy) and yes, Nixon suggests that someone had a personal agenda to try to expose kids to a few ideas they wouldn't necessarily get otherwise.
Looking back, I'm amused at Iceberg's shock at the idea of riding horses. Just 13 years later green berets were doing just that.
