Is it common to all modern Hasbro/FSS Joes that they can't hold their weapons well?

Bottom line up front answer is yes, the designs got much better. As time and sculpts progressed, trigger fingers were eventually sculpted in position to allow for better grip on weapons or separated from the rest of the hand to allow for better flexibility to fit grip. Some of the later 25th figures did have better sculpting, followed by Rise of Cobra line but it was somewhat inconsistent.
Once the line hit Pursuit of Cobra in 2009/2010 and onward the sculpts were much better on hands and weapons. With the addition of articulation allowing the wrists to bend, even better poses were possible. Although the head is grossly oversized, one of my favorite figures as far as compatibility with the weapons included was the Resolute 7-pack Scarlett. Her shoulder and elbow articulation combined with the hand sculpt allowed for perfect pose with her rifle. Some of the figures from the Pursuit of Cobra and 30th/50th/Retaliation anniversary did suffer from the angle at which their torso sculpt allowed for shoulder range of motion. With some, this was worse with their armor/tactical vests.
One such example is Retaliation Ultimate Duke. As damn cool looking as he was, his elbow articulation was lacking and when his vest is on the shoulders cannot move to allow his arm to cross far enough in front of his body to allow for holding his weapons requiring two hands. The issue can be mitigated with an exacto knife by cutting away at the vest and strategic cuts on his forearms and lower biceps. Anyway, these are just examples. The modern figures, in my opinion, boast benefits/cool features which far exceed the problems.
