Yeah, the art is an immense improvement on this issue from earlier issues. Even I have to admit that :-P Larry demonstrating why he was the Grandfather of this series.

There are definitely moments in just about every issue that requires a certain suspension of belief, and here we have another one. It sounds cool, looks cool -- "dodging tracer fire as if they were slow pigeons". But utterly ridiculous, lol.

Agreed. But, a) ya gotta use your cast of characters and b) gotta sell toys!

Classic.
The ol' "trapped in quicksand in a jungle/swamp environment" routine. Works every time!

Dude, I still laugh at it. I like the sound effects that accompany him falling--especially in the swamp scenes. "That's Tripwire!"

It has that most memorable scene of meeting the Soft Master who is more than he appears to be. I read that scene several times as a kid.
I had no idea you could do that with a pistol.
This issue has several key elements and is definitely a linchpin issue.
Yes, so very true; this one really kicks off what G.I.Joe will be about... well, really for the rest of eternity? Think about it, up to this point, Snake Eyes was more or less a bit player as much as any of the other O13. His role wasn't anymore important or dramatic than Clutch's or Stalker's or Scarlett's or Rock 'n' Roll's. Oh, and I still have no idea you can do that with a pistol. Would disarming a firearm like that really be that easy, or is that more for the sake of the story? It seems to me one cannot "jack the slide back" so easily on a pistol--pulling the slide back would require significant cooperation (and strength) on the part of the individual holding the gun. And would the magazine just drop out of the gun so easily just from pressing the "release latch" (I feel like there are more technical terms for some of these things, but I'm not gun savvy). I've only fired a couple of guns in my lifetime, but these are the impressions I got from my times shooting. But maybe it depends on the gun?
Either way, this issue does a fantastic job introducing the Soft Master. To me, he is immediately a likeable, kind, but also wise and ultimately strong character.

A few years ago though, she actually wanted to buy me some GI Joe comics for my birthday. She went through my collection to see which issues I didn't have, then actually went to a local comic book store by herself. She knows basically nothing about GI Joe, or any other comic, she was just hoping they had a few consecutive issues so they would go together as I read them. What she actually got me was #26, 27, 28, & 29! I was thrilled she went to that effort and then ended up with some of the most important issues to the series. I really loved the Storm Shadow/Snake Eyes stories back then, and up until the early 100s (before they started putting Snake Eyes' name on the cover).
That is a cool story, man.
As I read this issue, it makes me wonder "When did Larry
know
?" When did he know that this was to be Snake Eyes's backstory? When did he know that he was going to tie together Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes in an endless family feud? When did he know that Snake Eyes would become the marquee name in G.I.Joe (or, at least, his own writing of it)? Because the impressions I have gotten of G.I.Joe lore over the years is that Snake Eyes's figure was initially made all black
just to save costs
on the production run of the first line--it gave them a character that required no paint apps. It wasn't because he was meant to be a super-heroic man of mystery, who, oh yeah by the way, is also a world class ninja. And at the time of the first run, there was no concept (I don't think) of "Storm Shadow", so have his foil was still a long time coming. When Larry wrote filecards/dossiers for these early characters, when he began writing them into the comic, when did they start to take on a form of their own, when did he realize he wanted to introduce a new dynamic in their story, when did he realize he wanted a character to take center stage and the spotlight in the series? Because it's not apparent to me that that was always the design for Snake Eyes.
