I know we discussed placing any Firefighters on it but would the billets be open for just anyone with breaching experience or a certain MOS?
The way I have my structure, all members of an Assault Team are trained in Tactical Breaching (Mechanical, Explosive, Thermal, etc). One member in each 5 man Assault Team will have more training or experience than the others and be the Team Breacher. They may have been SF Engineers or Combat Engineers but not always. This is where I put more operator types like Tunnel Rat, IDW Tripwire, Short Fuze.
The Heavy Breaching Troop is where I put guys like Blow Torch, Ice Cream Soldier, BBQ, Barricade. They work in Teams of 4 per Squadron. They can be attached as a Team or generally 1 per Troop.
The Heavy Breaching Troop are the experts in all kinds of breaching and forcible entry into non-permissive environments thru various means including electronic bypass. They test new equipment, tactics, techniques and conduct training for the Assault Teams and others.
They get to go to cool specialist schools and training from specialists like deep sea oil drillers (like Bruce Wilis’s Drill crew in Armageddon), mining company and tunnel builders in using explosives, they study structures, geology, they learn how to exfiltrate people from crashed vehicles, lifts, etc and apply their knowledge to military settings
As an example of how they’d work in practice; from the movie GI Joe Retaliation, the Joes need to interdict the smuggling of a nuclear weapon. Hawk will send in a Recon team either ground or aerial who’ll conduct surveillance, building up a pattern of life on the structure and those inside. The Recon guys will test the earth to see if a helicopter can land, they’ll take soil samples, they’ll try to figure out things like how the doors and windows work, try to get samples of the building material etc and take lots and lots of pictures of everything.
From there, the guys from the Heavy Breaching Troop will join others including Intel guys, CBRNE guys, Assault Team Leaders, etc and they’ll obtain and study the building plans;
- work out methods of ingress
- Is the structure heavily bunkered or deeply buried? If so could a munition dropped from altitude pierce the outer shell? Communications?
- Since the structure is in an old warehouse then how long was it built, what is it made of, will stray bullets ricochet off the walls? Will they instead embed in the walls?
- how do the doors and windows open, are they glass, reinforced glass, how do they swing (inwards or outwards)
- Where is the nuke held? Is it in a vault somewhere, is there proper shielding?
- If it’s in a vault, do they know what kind? If so, is it electronic (electronic bypass) or is it like an old bank vault (tumbler) therefore do they need a guy who can crack safes? If it’s a safe, what kind, make and model if they have that information, Is it easier to crack it or get Blow Torch to cut through it?
- How is the building powered? Does it have its own generator, will using a Directed Energy Weapon to knock out its electronics work? How would it affect the nuke?
- Depending on how many guys are inside, can they gas them out / what are the airshafts like? Do the airshafts go thru the whole building? Set off sprinklers? Can they be misdirected or deceived? (Cue the PSYOP and Deception guys), play with the thermostat – heat / cold? Exploit any mildew, contaminate the food / water supply? Or have guys pretend to be conducting a routine building inspection and force their way through.
- Can they dig their way up through the sewer system or nearby building, tunnel through?
- So they decide on a top down raid, how strong is the roof? What kind of support beams are in there according to the building plans, can they support the weight of a rappelling soldier?
- Can portions of the building be sealed off so they can isolate the nuke from most of the guard force?
- What are the ambient sounds around the building? Will an approaching helicopter be heard? Or could the sound be masked by a nearby train track?
- work out where to plant charges that will bring down the structure once the nuke is recovered or make big holes through non supporting walls to make entry and escape easier
That's how I'll use them in the book I keep researching and may never get around to actually writing
Edit - sorry forgot about your MOS question. Most of the guys on the Breaching Troop will be Combat Engineers or Engineer types and all the Flame Thrower guys (they'll be experts in Thermobaric or Flash weapons instead) with some Firefighters (BBQ mostly)
Inferno (The Sigma 6 Firefighter) I'm thinking of attaching to a Combat Rescue Cell. They'll be mostly Pararescue Jumper / Trauma Medic / Rescue Trooper types (like Med Alert, Lifeline, especially Battle Corps Lifeline)
