So I started a new thread for discussion to avoid contaminating the other threads with spoilers.
So I read this over my lunch hour and my review is as follows:
This is good. Like I said in my earlier post, it's not great and it was never going to be, just because of the nature of the story that they are trying to tell. But it is a lot of fun. The SF side of the story always had a sort of bizarre slapstick quality, and the Joes match that with a sort of Saturday-morning-cartoon sensibility that complements it well. This is clearly not the kind of material that would benefit from a very realistic take.
The fights are short but well-written. I suppose doing two 99-second rounds for each fight would have taken up the entire comic and been kind of boring, so most of these fights are 3-4 pages long. Maybe later issues will have longer fights as the tournament gets whittled down. The writers have always said that their goal was to make sure each fight told a story with its own beginning, middle, and end, and in that they succeeded very well.
My biggest criticism, having read the entire issue, is the scene where Roadblock tries to shoot Hakan with an M2. This was the kind of thing you might see in Capcom vs. SF where the characters pull weapons out of hammerspace, combined with the usual fighting game trope where weapons batter the health meter but don't actually hurt anyone.
My problem with it was trying to separate the video game logic from my real-world understanding of what an M2 does to a person. Roadblock just tried to liquefy a human being, and I'm not okay with that. If it was Mortal Kombat, or if we were talking about a villainous character, I might be more accepting of it, but that is a seriously fucked up thing for a "good guy" character to do to a person. I hope they reign it in a little in future issues.
The one big surprise that came out of this issue was Ryu throwing the match. I'll be the first to admit that when I saw the lineup pitting Ryu against Jinx, I thought, "Well, that'll be a short fight." As much as I like Jinx, her entire backstory is that she is a novice. Ryu and Snake Eyes are the most skilled fighters in their respective canons, so it would be easy to assume they will both go undefeated until they fight each other late in the tournament. By having Ryu find a reason to throw the match, the writers have successfully shaken up the storyline while still maintaining Ryu's status as a skilled fighter.
I also enjoyed the panel where Jinx uses the Shoryuken Dragon Punch. Things like that are what make crossovers so much fun.
I'm looking forward to the Storm Shadow vs. Croc Master matchup. I've always liked Croc Master and I've always wanted to see more of him. I'm still rooting for Storm Shadow, though, because he is my favorite character. I'm curious to see which side SS is on in this version of the Joe-verse.
I'm also wondering if we will see a Storm Shadow vs. Snake Eyes fight. It's kind of obligatory for a Joe story, but it's also been done so many times before that it would be too predictable. Since the writers have already demonstrated a willingness to shake things up (by giving Ryu a first-round loss), I would bet they eliminate SS specifically to avoid a SS vs. SE fight, or at least try to put an unexpected spin on it.
My last complaint is one that I doubt many will agree with. I grew up on SF2, so I'm not familiar with any of the (totally inferior
) games released after 1994. A lot of these characters appear to be from SFIV, which is a smart marketing move for the younger crowd but kind of lost on me. When I look at characters like Hakan, I'm like, "Who the heck is this dork?" The backstory of the matches that talked about fights like Roadblock vs. Zangief made me cry a little inside, because that would be awesome.
