I know someone mentioned that they didn't think that some of the Joes should start in Combat Support MOS's then move to Combat Arms. However after re-reading the book "Roughneck Nine One" (where one of the soldiers started as an 88H Cargo Specialist before moving over to an 18 SF soldier) and reading several of the obituaries of fallen SOF soldiers that Loose Cannon provided I am thinking it is more common than not. I believe in one of the obituaries a soldier started out as repairing helicopter engines before moving to Infantry and then SF. Guess I am going to have to rethink my Joes again. lol
I occasionally dabble in writing!
Here's a thought on MOS' and which ones are/aren't appropriate for Joes at the start of their careers: How many SEALS start their careers in the infantry? None. How does that affect their combat performance? I leave that to each of you to assess. My point is that contact drills, patrolling, raiding and so on can all be taught to anyone. In fact, it's easier to teach those skills than it is to teach some of the more esoteric mechanical/technical skills. So if someone makes it through selection having already been trained to fix helicopter engines or rebuild weapons or manage a warehouse or use heavy equipment or whatever, then they bring something very valuable to the team.
