It's not impossible but the person isn't going to do both.
Yeah, even as a 10 year old, a lot of the file card stuff didn't make sense, coming from a family full of veterans and wanting to be in the service myself.
As far as the college degree thing, I have met a lot of guys and girls with college degrees who enlisted. A bit of recruiting trivia a musician specialist told me a couple of years ago, competition for military enlisted bandsmen has gotten so fierce that most of the people who get in have masters degrees in music performance or a related field. When I was in high school, a really good high school player with potential could get in, but that changed over time with more people getting degrees and fewer paying gigs for bassoon players and such. For me, as a retired officer now, E-4 pay doesn't seem like the high life, but for a cornet player who wants to play for a living, enlisting as an E-2 (college degree in the USMC nets you a whopping one pay grade), E-3 after boot camp, E-4 and 5 roll around pretty quick and you will likely be an E-7 around 12 years of service, the money and benefits are as good as it gets.
Right, so back to the spec ops. So I have met a lot of people with degrees who are not bandsmen but either were in the service, and got a degree at night school, were in, got out, got a degree and were bored and went back in. A lot of people will join just for the experience-guns, ranger school etc whatever floats your boat-even with a degree. Some, just want to do it for a few years, some have aspirations of being an officer but want enlisted experience first, some want to be an officer but either are not competitive for officer selection or don't want to wait for the somewhat lengthier process. I have a cousin, a BS in Engineering, joined the Navy as a nuke submariner figuring at some point he would become an officer, 20 years later he retired as a Master Chief.
As far as flying, the stuff Scarlet has like flying top secret military aircraft is very far fetched, but enlisted spec ops or really secret squirrel types learning to fly isn't that out there. They wouldn't be actual "naval aviators" per se, but they might have been taught to fly. I say this only because I know a handful of civilian (FBI and NSA) counter terrorism and intel guys that were trained to fly and I could see an enlisted person who is working long term with those sort of groups being trained to fly. If you had a mixed group of civilian and military intel or spec ops people, the person going to flight school will probably be the one they can spare during that time frame and who has the aptitude and medical quals for it. I doubt they would get to wear pilot wings if they ever put on a dress uniform.
