UKSF and the Pathfinders resisted using it and instead used M16s for years until some MoD twonk insisted they swap. I think these days they're using M4s...
Being from a rural area in the US, I grew up with a rifle in my hand. I remember reading magazine articles about the new bullpup rifle with integral optics that was the future of infantry rifles. Then, a couple years later, it seemed like it wasn't the wave of the future after all. Was it accuracy issues? that seems to stick in my head that the rifle had unacceptable accuracy.
To be fair, the M16 series is now a decent rifle, but it is a long time in coming. It had a lot of birthing problems as well and through the various changes, we have had to change bullet weights to accommodate different rifling twists. Chrome lined chamber and barrel, which reduces accuracy slight, very slightly, but increases barrel life and eases cleaning. And, finally started putting optics on them.
I was issued an M14 variant at one point and I preferred it to the M16 but over the years, I sort of came around to the M16. I now have my own AR15/M4 instead of buying an M14, mostly because it was easier for my daughter to shoot.
