Of course this is all conjecture - it remains to be seen how fans will react and whether or not they'll accept it. I just think that if the characters are so different from their classic versions, then even if the stories are good, it won't feel like we're reading G.I. Joe. I will certainly give it a try... I read every G.I. Joe comic ever put out (except reloaded). I'll read the new stuff.
But I think of the time when DDP killed off Lady Jaye. There was a letter sent to DDP that they had the courage to publish. It basically said this, "That character has been around since some of you were in diapers. You have no idea what you're doing. I'm never reading another of your comics."
I certainly felt that way, but I stuck around until the end. I'm not a huge DDP fan. I think they did some good things, but on the whole I don't think they ever really understood the property all that well.
Funny thing about Larry Hama coming back - Some months ago, I read a post from a Tanker about the upcoming IDW series...
He basically said, "Larry Hama is like Stan Lee. Thanks for what you've done in the past, but it's time for you to retire." I don't know if I'm ready to say that much yet, but I do see his point.
People are changed by time. Who we are in our youth, is not who we are today... obviously there is some correspondence, but time changes us. George Lucas is not the same film maker he was - thus the new Star Wars is NOT what the old ones were.
Hama's involvement may be a mixed blessing - he may feel the need to change things for the worst reason of all: the sheer novelty of being different. I was unimpressed by the 6 page preview of his... in fact, I liked the other 2 short stories much better.
So, I suppose the most I can really say is: We'll see.
Which one is his(Hama)? I don't have it in front of me.
But you have a point about Hama. You see in the beginning of the Marvel run everything has a much different (more realistic) feel to it. By the end with Ninja Force and Star Brigade it gets pretty lame, although it wasn't all bad. I don't know how much control he had by the end there. Even the File cards got Worse and less reality Based and more like he was writing them for a child audience. I blame Hasbro execs for this. I think Hasbro pulled the strings on what they were producing in toys and what Hama needed to include in the comics.
The realness of GIJoe is what makes it cool. The gimicky cartoony spin Hasbro put on the line near the end of the Marvel Run and those DIC cartoons was meant for kids. That only works so long and then they are on to TMNT or Ben 10 or Bakugan. The more based in reality and on non-SuperHero non-(Monstro-Viper, Predicons, Star Brigade) the greater the fan appreciation of the product. It's based on what our nation is good at. Putting out world dominating, top-notch, total bad-ass soldiers. Something all young boys can aspire to become.
How those joes became the cream of the crop is what makes them special/cool/ and appreciated. (And this is why the file cards are so important to the line as well)
