I guess if you want to maintain some sort of link to the whole "glider" thing, maybe all the glider guys can be drawn from the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd BCT, which traces its lineage to the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment from WWII if I'm not mistaken. Or maybe you could draw some of them from the 101st Airborne's 1st BCT, which has a lineage that can be traced to the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment.
The thing about this though is that unit lineages are mutable, units are stood up, stood down, and reorganized every so often, so it might be better to just stick with a fixed, "point in time" modern interpretation of GI Joe so to speak—just stick with a certain year or maybe a certain five-year period as your ideal modern GI Joe era—or you'll find yourself with the never-ending task of constantly updating this type of unit lineage-based stuff. It nearly drove me nuts when I was doing the filecard project thing. Unless, you know, that's the part of it that you actually enjoy.
