HA- I had this happen with a vintage Bullhorn recently! I'd been out of the vintage Joes collecting game for years, so hadn't really had many figures posed around on stands, but after purchasing Bullhorn recently both of his heels exploded! Talked to a few other collectors and they blamed it on the heat of AZ drying out the plastic, but apparently it's not limited to my state. Just plastic growing brittle over time it seems.
BTW, I use stands from a company called Marauders, which seem better than Small Joes vintage stands for some reason. Could have just been that figure, but I didn't want to take chances on exploding the heels of my other vintage figures (some are damn expensive to replace), and have had good luck so far with Marauders. Also, their stands are modular and allow for a 'click/connect' if you want to create 'army builder' displays, etc.
