Box is stupidly oversized for the stuff included. The controllers feature SCREWS holding the battery covers in place (redundant, the covers are pretty stiff to begin with, I didn't even reattach the screw on the one I set up).
The console itself isn't much bigger than your given DVD box set. The included games list is the "usual suspects" for a Sega Genesis collection, the Golden Axes, the Streets of Rages, the Vectormen, the gaggle of Sonics. Oddly, Sonic 3 is absent, but you DO get Sonic and Knuckles...so I guess that evens out. I do give props to this release for digging up some lesser seen and obscure Sega stuff like Arrow Flash, Crack Down, Ecco Jr, Shadow Dancer, and cult favorite Eternal Champions. There are also another 40 some games I haven't messed with, basic gaming offerings to fill out the box's number (Checkers, Chess, "Cannon" (Worms-ish) and...Curling?!).
And any deficiencies in the game library is offset by the inclusion of a dedicated cartridge port. Remember, this is NOT a "true Genesis", any game that used hardware tricks (like the 32X, Game Genie, Virtua Racing or X-Men with its infamous "reset") won't work, or won't work properly.
The biggest downside to this purchase is...the controllers. Yes, they are 6 buttons, and yes they are wireless (even seem styled after the classic Saturn pad). But the actual execution of the design feels cheap with big buttons that I can only describe as "toy-ish" with cheap feeling plastic. The wireless ability is even worse.
They clearly used bottom barrel wireless components, as the controller has to send a new signal with each button press (illustrated by the FLASHING LED when you hold a button). Complex signals (ie, multiple inputs at once) are not interpreted well at all.
The result is that complex maneuvers or rapid presses are only registered in a haphazard way. Playing Shinobi III, maybe one in five attempts actually got my character to run (done by double tapping the dpad forward). I'd almost preferred they just given my a damned wired controller (and probably would have been cheaper to make). Thankfully, the console DOES support classic Genesis controllers via two front mounted jacks.
It isn't terrible, but I question that value when so much of this material has been seen and reseen in various flavors over the years. Sega and AtGames (the maker of this device) have NOT had any qualms about milking the Genesis's corpse for over half a decade, between the prior plug and play options and the endless rereleases on digital platforms.
That said, for $25 or so, it isn't a bad little purchase (especially if you still have old Genesis carts laying around), and this particular release deserves some props for incorporating several titles that haven't been seen endlessly in other versions. I'd hesitate going much higher considering you will probably want to spend some $15 to get a decent controller for the thing.
I haven't seen any in my area, do you have any pics to show? Has anyone else found one at their Dollar General/Family Dollar, etc?
