and you want to also claim Hama did something no one had ever done before, than I dare you to actually define what was so unique that he did. getting more writing gigs in no way makes him brilliant. Uwe Bol has made several movies, but just because people keep hiring him doesn't mean his films are quality. get it.
and I don't care what other comic writers think. I think his dialogue stinks -- as does most comic dialogue. I'm not a comic guy because IMO comic's have cheap exposition and poor dialogue. it is a completely different medium than film, and requires different skills -- skills that Ham a does not posses. so he has no business anywhere near a Joe movie.
and the cartoon aired well into 1994, regardless of how many new episodes were made, and the movie never saw a theatrical release because the lack of success of the Transformers and My LIttle Pony movies. if you want to mention things, make sure your positions are factual. god, I hate specious arguments. by your logic, you probably think curry cures Alzheimers because India has the lowest reported number of Alzheimer cases in the world. of course, you haveto ignore the fcat that the life expectancy in India is only 64 years, and Alzheimers doesn't occur until after 65. you see, there ar eplenty of other factors that go into results. even so, the length of how long the cartoon ran in no way means the comic was brilliant. the comic could have been (and was very likely) succesful because it complimented a very succesful toyline. but tell me, if the comic was so succesful on its own merits, why didn't it last beyond the end of the toyline? it didn't, so there is a very possible correlation of the success of the comic to the success of the toy. and unlike a cartoon, which you can air repeats and maintain an audience, a comic has to continually create new issue. so the fact that the cartoon stayed on the air just as long as the comic ran shows there may not have been any difference in either of their success. of course, that would require you to actually dig deep into numerous factors andnot just make surface arguments.
you prefer the comic, that's fine. I prefer the cartoon. that doesn't mean either of our opinions are lacking, it means we prefer different things. but it is clear as day that working on the comic doesn't make Hama more vital to the movie, which this argument is about, than Buzz Dixon. but the only way to defend your position otherwise is to present irrlevant, and flawed, arguments.
Your opinion on this matter seems dangerous to me. You are not a comic fan, yet this IS a comic property. From the ground up, every aspect of ARAH has hinged on the comics. I'm sorry that you find the medium lacking. I cannot understand your opinion, but I won't fight it.
Larry Hama is a very clever man and a BRILLIANT storyteller. His dialogue is timely and his style of dialogue changes with the medium he writes for, as do most writers.
Do you want to know what Larry Hama did that was so innovative?
Larry Hama not only invented the filecards on the packages (which became an industry standard) but wrote the grand majority of them. He created almost every impactful character of the entire line. He wove intricate webs linking the characters in clever and exciting ways. He kept well up to date on his research of military tactics and jargon. He produced the first silent comic ever. Some call it overrated, but I'll lay dollars to donuts that Frank Miller himself would call that issue fantastic storytelling. Hama also drew it.
Larry Hama was not some white suit who'd never picked up a weapon before. He served his country in the US army during wartime. For that ALONE you should take the bass out of your voice and show a little respect.
GI Joe was an excellent comic book. Larry Hama's writing, his style, and his adaptive dialogue have all made me think over the years. If you think the comics are tripe then you haven't read enough of them. I've reread the entire series multiple times and I find jewels in each issue. I have to say I am somewhat taken aback by a Joe fan who dislikes the comic medium altogether.
In any case, there is no changing your mind. I'll just say that ONLY Larry Hama could have written GI Joe and made it what it is today.
Remember, the microcosm of the cartoons spans only a few years. The comics have run from 1982 to 1995 and then 2001 to 2008. That's TWENTY years of only briefly interrupted continuity.
Joe is a multimedia property. There's room for everything and everyone and I will lay odds again that Larry Hama has far more fans in the Joe community than detractors.
My 2 cents.
